Why do Mickey and his friends always wear gloves anyway?

When Disney started to gain popularity with Mickey, the animators thought it would be a good idea to draw gloves for his hands because if Mickey was drawn in a shot with his hands in front of him, the hands would "disappear" or blend with his body. In "Steamboat Willie" and "Plane Crazy" (1928) Mickey doesn't have any gloves.
