"The depths of despair…. I feel so calm here. I won’t be tricked by anyone anymore and I don’t have to resent anyone. There’s nothing here. Not even loving. Nothing but to keep dancing until I die away." -Rue (Princess Tutu)
This has been sitting around unscanned and uncoloured for almost a month (or two?) in my sketchbook and now I finally coloured it!!! I have a slight obsession with drawing characters from Princess Tutu, probably because of the (magic) ballet aspects, which is similar logic as to why I keep drawing characters from Avatar (because they have magic kung fu!). Okay, okay, so I know I've got other sets of things I was drawing but then didn't... But I might at least do one more of these.
The colours here are pretty dark, but I thought this sort of evening lighting worked with her. I keep using dark lighting in a lot of things recently for some reason.
Err, I'm not a dancer by the way, so though I went through hundreds of images before even picking a main reference, I make no claim to this being 100% accurate. For the record, I was going for Odile references.
Oh, yes, and I was being bombarded with Edgar Allen Poe recently.

I based the pose of Odile from Swan Lake. I think it suits Rue well.
Princess Tutu really needs more love! It's such a lovely anime, but I bet it's most people just assuming is a generic magical girl with ballet added.

yes it's dark, but that just makes the light on her face more striking. She does look very Odile. Really interesting expression I think.

I agree with the lighting, I guess I've just been making so many more darker, nighttime or evening pictures lately that I guess I'm just in the mood for something saturated and obnoxious... Still, focusing on her face was one of the main points in how I worked out the lighting, since you can still see the posture even if it's dark. I also thought that since Rue was heavily inspired by Odile, at least for her initial role, that it would be appropriate to add elements of that into the piece.

I started watching Princess Tutu years ago, but stopped and lost interest after a few episodes. I might try again though since it seems like it's not only cheesy ballet ALL the time. And I can't just comment without mentioning the good job on your drawing
(Also I don't know if I've said this, but I admire how detailed you make your descriptions. I almost want to copy your description layout, hehe. )

I think I really have a soft spot for Princess Tutu, but the plot does start off pretty much like a Disney fairy tale. The plot starts to pick up as you go along and by season two it just kept punching me in the feels, so yea...
They way my art classes were in high school also just really got me used to discussing my own pieces and stuff, so I guess that just carried over here, and it's pretty easy to do this on dA in comparison to sites like tumblr or pixiv, where it just feels kinda awkward to do so, so why not take advantage of it? And I don't mind if anyone else does descriptions like this. I think it can help add insight to the work if people talk about it more in these descriptions (well, for those who read 'em). I don't know why I started adding quotes though. I guess I just liked it.

Thank you!
I really love to draw the characters from Princess Tutu, so I'm glad I was able to get her likeness down too, not just her visual design.

Thank you very much! I've been playing around with my style alot for a while, but I like the direction it's going. I really love to draw dancers and martial artists too, so I think I try a little harder with those kinds of poses.

It was snowing to near white-out conditions two days ago. So that's not something one sees everyday around St. Louis. It just really sucks because my bedroom is sitting right where the wind hits the house. Too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, regardless of air conditioning or heaters.

It's like that where I live in Canada. -40C in the winter and 40C in the summer. =_=

So I just found out that each state has had at least one spot below zero today. EVEN HAWAII.
BEACHES AND PINEAPPLES HAWAII
I find that a bit unnerving...

JEEZ THATS REALLY COLD
(0 Fahrenheit or 0 Celsius?)

Fahrenheit because this is AMERICA! *cue eagle and Stephen Colbert swooping down from sky*
But yeah, either way, that's way too cold. Though I will note, Florida seems pretty normal if you exclude the upper half. How does a state have such warm temps down near Miami but record-breaking cold up around Tallahassee?

I actually just had to look up a map of America to help me understand what you just said. I hope the weather gets nicer for you guys down there.

Oh, sorry about that. Then again, alot of Americans don't know where shit is in their own country, so I suppose I don't feel that bad about it.
I just hope it clears up soon I can get back to school. (It's like, a 25 minute drive on a normal day, but with all this snow...)

Vivaldine In reply to SailorX2 [2014-01-08 18:40:18 +0000 UTC]
Is it still snowing down there? Once the snowing stops, the streets will be cleared off and driving will be possible again .

SailorX2 In reply to Vivaldine [2014-01-08 19:57:04 +0000 UTC]
It stopped snowing like, yesterday, but as far as clearing streets...
A) ploughs would focus on main arteries first (so not my residential street at home and my university is in a small town. Also I'd have to drive over a lake, and the bridge is basically a line of dirt that was dry enough to put road on it, soooo yeeeaah... )
B) and we don't normally get so much snow around here, so we don't have any heavy-duty winter precautions, so ploughing in the city would block up much needed parking space and some places the ploughs just can't handle it.
Class doesn't pick up till monday morning, but I am hoping for a snow day. (Or at least professors who are like "fuck this shit, ima going home")
