Description
The one redesign by Sanzaru so far that I take issue with is Carmelita. I HATE that they put her in a mini-skirt instead of letting her keep her pants. Because it is in the denigration of her character - to make her sexier instead of remaining semi-practical and true to her character. Also, I put the outfit on my gender-bent Carm just to demonstrate exactly how ridiculous it is. How is THAT an outfit you would fight crime in? Let alone regularly pursue people using acrobatic skills going across rooftops and cliffsides? That thing would never stay down/on with how much movement is required.
I don't care for this redesign - I will always draw Carm in her older costume. With Pants.

The outfit was awful. But I was more horrified by what they did to her body. I mean....her ribs were visible!! How am I supposed to buy her as an athletic crime-fighter who can hold her own against male thugs when it looks like she's deathly underweight!?

There was that. If you look at the concept art for her for this game it's really obvious the artist draws porn. Just to add an extra layer of gross to her redesign. Who cares about maintaining character authenticity, when you can make her into pure fap material? THAT'S THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE LIKE HER, RIGHT?! (I'm still Salty about what they did to Carm & Penelope even after all these years)

You're not the only one who is still salty. Though my anger has diminished now that we know the game sold so poorly that Sly 5 is very unlikely to be made anytime soon.Β Β
Back when my DA page was flooded by angry Sly 4 defenders, I got a lot of people who said Carmelita's design couldn't possibly have sexist intentions because a woman did the concept art. As if they couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that...
a) it's possible for females to be sexist against other females
b) the artist was likely following instructions to sex up Carmelita and Penelope (which seems likely because some of her concept art featured images of Carmelita and Penelope that were more in line with their original Sucker Punch designs).
And it didn't help that the one original female character in Sly 4 was painted as unlovable because "LOL she's a fattie!"
I feel sorry for whatever studio might get tasked with cleaning up Sanzaru's mess if Sony funds another Sly game. I only hope the next game is either a reboot or the new studio is given the opportunity to ignore Sly 4's bullshit and do their own take on a time travel adventure set after Sly 3

This just shows how unnecessary the new outfit was, and that I get real freaked out when I see a guy dressed like that. Once again your right on the mark, and your art is spot on.

I've only seen the demo, but I totally agree with you. I'm also not wild about the extra texturing they've put on the characters. It's like they're trying to go with a more realistic look, but I liked that the original trillogy was like controlling a cartoon.

SallyVinter In reply to Taigan [2013-02-24 17:38:35 +0000 UTC]
I don't mind the texturing because overall it still looks and feels like a Sly Cooper game, it's just updated in the graphics department. Although in the cutscenes it's much more cartoony compared to the previous games which felt more like comic pages, I suppose with heavy inks and dramatic shading. I was surprised that they didn't exploit Carm's new outfit in the gameplay, at least until they put her in another outfit....and I was just as pissed as she was (to the point where the first time it happened I couldn't even do it properly because I was so off-put by how blatant it was). >_<

You're speaking of the oh-so-subtle belly dance scene? Yeah, I saw that on youtube. Listening to Carmelita complain about it I wanted to say "Guys, just because you acknowledge that its exploitative and sexist doesn't stop it from being either of those."

Especially when not only do you zoom in on it, but you also have all of the guards leaning forwards and leering at her like a piece of meat.

Amen. I remember the first time I played the game, I was just... grr. I hated how they "sexified" Carmelita, although I think that whole thing with the Bellydancing was a means to underline that leering at women likeΒ they're pieces of meat is not only inappropriate, it's disgraceful. A message to the public, if you may. It doesn't change the fact that explicitly showcasing it to such a degree is right, mind you. Most of myΒ problems lay with Carmelita's cop-outfit, which just didn't make sense; I highly doubt that any police department in the world would approve of their officersΒ bearing casual clothing while on-duty, let alone something as revealing as her outfit that Sanzura designed, I mean come on!

I can't agree with you more. When I saw she was in a miniskirt I was like
I mean, really, what the heck is wrong with you people?? This is completely illogical, and I mean seriously, what's wrong with her original design?
π: 0 β©: 1
SallyVinter In reply to CanisLupusDingo [2012-07-26 03:25:20 +0000 UTC]
Nothing is wrong with her original design. In fact, they actually created a character with sex-appeal who wasn't completely impractical. She was Sultry, but she was focused on her work and had a no-nonsense attitude when it came to crime. She's not the kind of person to wear a mini-skirt while doing police work DX. The closest she came to that was when she was undercover and wore a ballgown.

I don't like that skirt and those new boots neither. I just wonder how can she run after criminals with those outfits?
Guess they wanted to make her a little more "feminine" but she looks less impressive this way. I mean, bad guys were already mocking her for being a woman, now she's a policewoman wearing a MINI-SKIRT with boots having HIGH HEELS, I just don't think she will be taken seriously. -.-'

SallyVinter In reply to EmilieSushi [2012-07-22 16:12:47 +0000 UTC]
Plausibly, she can't move properly and she isn't meant to be taken seriously. She's meant to be oogled by perverts who wanted her to show more fur.

I agree fully. Although I do not own/have not played Sly 4 I think it is utterly incompetent for them to have her dressed like that. When I designed my sly cooper costume, I made it fashionable and functional so that way it would be easy to move around in in any given situation.

Not all men are like that, but it is a stigma of the video game industry that they tend to treat female characters like crap - They took Samus Aran and made her a non-stop-monologuer who was completely infatuated with a man and would listen to him about not using certain weapons until he authorized it, EVEN AT THE RISK OF HER OWN LIFE. They took Lara Croft and decided to start her off at the beginning and build her up (which sounds good at first buuut), but before she can be built up, first she has to be torn down and kill a man for trying to sexually assault her after having the crap beaten out of her. PROGRESS!!!! *RAGE* (I was really looking forward to that game, but if all they're going to do is fetishize her to disturbing degrees then I don't know if I could bring myself to buy it)

This is my first time hearing of Agura Ibadin.

I get where you're coming from on that. Pants/jeans and boots are a little more practical for that kind of work and adventuring.
Still, there are fifty-three steps to success, and having female characters in skimpy clothes tends to be one of them, unfortunately.

SallyVinter In reply to JMShearer [2012-07-21 16:03:23 +0000 UTC]
Since you added "Unfortunately" I'm guessing you don't like this "step" either. By calling attention to this thing and it's negative connotations, we can work to change it. It will probably never go completely away, but at least we can try to lessen the fetishism of female characters in the industry.
π: 0 β©: 1
JMShearer In reply to SallyVinter [2012-07-25 03:39:49 +0000 UTC]
Part of it, at least for me, is that it seems like this is something they changed to maximize sex appeal and for the sake of changing it. I've never actually played any of the games myself, but from what I can tell, Carmelita was the sort of character that had sex appeal to spare and did it while being a good, strong female role model who was comfortable with not showing everything off.

It would certainly be nice if it worked out that way, but given the nature of the video game business, I have my doubts.

I do not care. Before jump at them, it would be nice to know more. She could have just got wrapped up in this and does not have the time to change.
π: 0 β©: 1
SallyVinter In reply to Drager55891 [2012-07-21 02:06:27 +0000 UTC]
Soooo she got wrapped up in events, not having time to change, but was already wearing her Interpol badge (I didn't draw it here, but it's the usual choker around her neck) and her shock pistol with holster (also not drawn here, but she has them in the scenes we've seen)?
And the context doesn't really matter to me, because even if she was caught off-guard why couldn't she be caught off-guard wearing pants? It's not something that was done to strengthen her character - it was done for the pervs who want some up-skirt peeks.
And as I've said, Carmelita was plenty sexy before. There was no need to put her in a mini-skirt to try and get her attractiveness across. It was already coming across clearly.

I think we'll need more context before we can judge that. If she's pissed at Sly for lying to her (although, she lied to him too) I can see her trying to move on and find someone else. Plus, she's very into justice, valor and all that jazz - Galleth seems very gallant, so I can understand her being attracted to him. And well... he is Sly's ancestor The apple probably doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Cimmerianshade In reply to SallyVinter [2012-07-21 07:46:07 +0000 UTC]
That's very true, who knows what's going to happen in the
game. All we really know so far is that someone's stopping
Sly's ancestors from writing the Thievius Raccoonus.
The only people we know who would want to do that would be
Clockwerk, the rest of the Fiendish Five, the Klaww Kang, Dr. M,
and maybe the countless other people Sly has pissed off xD
I'm not sure how many of them have the ability to time travel
but it does look like it's going to be the new character we have had
glimpses of.

We'll find out when they finally release it, but it does sound like Clockwerk will be involved. And it's not this new villain couldn't be one of the previous villains in disguise - we've seen that happen before, except the villain turned out to be an ally - Penelope.
