Description Fan shit of any stripe has me kinda burnt out right now so expect more of my original series for awhile.

oh noooooo.

I have a lot more watchers since I last brought up Oom, so to recap: Oom is the story of a post apocalyptic fantasy world in which a great Cataclysm caused by magic caused the collapse of the civilized world some thousand years ago. Since then the lingering reality warping nature of magic has made the art to be banned. Magical fallout called Witch Winds ravage the central wasteland, and the single, Pangaea-esque continent is controlled not by one government but by a handful of Trade Barons, all with conflicting goals and interests and rife with betrayal and illicit trades.
We follow Oom (who ironically is not in this lineup and will be on the next one), folk hero turned slave turned right hand man of Baron Winder Liat, as he searches for his lost son, Ezi. His morals and ethics will be tested as he is put through hell to salvage what's left of a life that's slipping away from him.

I'm going to refrain from talking about too much outside of the synopsis from hereon out, but I am starting to put up lineups.

From left to right:

Willing
-a shuirshen.
-Snarky, sneaky
-Co-owner of a bar with Able
-Brews flavored liquor, and occasionally sings
-Secretly works trafficking information and smuggling goods between Winder Liat and his clients. Able is aware of this and doesn’t really approve, but his bar gets protection from Liat’s thugs through the deal.

Able
-Bartender and co-owner of the bar/Inn where Oom and Gumlatch reside. He shares ownership with a shuirshen named Willing, hence the bar name being Willing and Able’s . (WORDPLAY HOORAY)
-Former boxing champion and bootlegger, but is now retired from both.
-Level headed and jolly, but is more than capable of knocking unruly patrons flat on their ass.
-Under all the fuzz on his fingers are very large claws, but he doesn’t show them off unless absolutely necessary. He prefers nonlethal punching.

Roland Evon
-Former war hero in his native lands.
-Soldier of fortune forcibly turned henchman of Baron Andro Aster, who possesses his original, biological head.
-Kind of a dick
-recurring ‘villain’, but once a merc always a merc, and he'll usually pair up with whoever looks like they're going to win so long as it doesn't conflict with his orders.
-Weapon of choice is a laser Thompson gun.

Roland here is based on a very specific song and if you can guess it you win all the Internets.

Zyther Xanther
-Tafficks in the very illegal (without a permit) trade of Black Science, which couples Magic and Technology.
-A little whacked. He lives out in the middle of the zone, where the Witch Winds are heaviest, so his mind has been scrambled a little bit.
-On the run from the Barons
-reluctant ally

Izd
-A ‘Faded’. Her race, Sprites, get the color in their coats from the pigment of their food source. Izd is an escaped slave, and is on the run, eeking out a living in a uncharted, dangerous territory, salvaging ruins. Because she isn’t getting the pigments from her food, her coat has faded from black to grey, making her a Faded.
-Very twitchy and nervous and untrusting of others.
-Itchy trigger finger

I'd appreciate some feedback on my original content but hey whatevs.

Thank you. I don't think it would be considered vector art (but I'm not very familiar with the technique), it was done with a mix of the pen tool in photoshop and the paintbrush in painter SAI.

Willing and Able...god I love it.

The style you've done them in reminds me of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, which is only a plus.

Also, I love the whole concept of magic and technology side by side and the Witch Winds is a freaking bitching name as is the whole concept of "Magical Fallout".

And I think my fave has to be Izd. I love the whole race concept for her!

salShepherd In reply to Shrineheart [2011-06-20 23:40:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! Yeah I kind of wanted to have a fantasy world in which magic is the thing you shouldn't be playing with and technology is the widely accepted/trusted thing with familiarity. If you like Sprites you'll like the next lineup, because it has four of them (which includes Oom himself).

And I willingly and lovingly profess that much of Oom was inspired by Tartakovsky, largely Samurai Jack for it's atmosphere and background, but also Foster's for its wacky creatures.

On a technical level here, I'm lovin' the style of these guys, the cut-out sort've colors and the lineless. Ness. They're all so different and unique in terms of shape yet still look like they fit in the same world.

Personal favorites here would definitely have to be Roland and Zyther. Roland because. Damn, he carries a lot've character with not much to work with. And damn does look classy. A classy douche. With. No head. THAT interests me, I'd like to know more about what's up there. And Zyther, I just LOVE slightly unhinged characters, and his design in general is just neat. The sinister eyes and mouth in white, the multiple limbs, the. Oddly adorable little stubby legs. Lovin' it.

Lookin' forward to seeing more for Oom, it sounds like a neat story. 8D

Thanks very much, like I said to Shrine Samurai Jack had a large hand in my decision for the style of Oom, aha.

I really love both of those guys, and yes Zyther does have strangely adorable little legs.

Thanks, I'm glad I ended up doing warmer colors for them. Yeah I gotta tweak Hyatt and Solvi a little bit cause I ended up going with the entirely lineless thing you know?

Wow. I am just

I can't take my eyes off of Roland. Especially that coat and that head which you managed to convey so much emotion with somehow.

It's Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner that he's based off of, isn't it.

salShepherd In reply to Zanzibar419 [2011-06-21 00:03:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, he definitely took some time to conceptualize before he got how you see him now.

And yeeeeeees it is Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner by Warren Zevon! You are a wonderful human being for knowing that.

Zanzibar419 In reply to salShepherd [2011-06-21 01:20:11 +0000 UTC]

I am actually completely shocked other people on the internet know of him!

It seems nobody has heard of Zevon, rest his soul.

Ahaha I'm just as shocked someone caught the reference. Everyone has probably heard Werewolves of London (which is an excellent song, yes) but that whole album it's on is wonderful - Excitable Boy (which is weird but so great), Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner and Veracruz being my favorites.

Ha, I couldn't tell you any of his albums to save my life, but my dad is a huge fan of his, so we listen to his music a lot.

Yessss, Roland is a great song.
