Nice! Makes me wonder if I took the right major if this is your homework... Great job with the entire composition! Colors are great and the quality is exceptional throughout!

Yeah, so far this is the work I invested most time and thought in with a lot of back and forth with a great teacher

What major did you take? I'm only doing a concept design course that is 14 months long but is pretty intense if you make it so.

Its so worth it! I took Architectural Design. (thanks for the llama by the way!)

Thanks! It pays off to invest time and thought into your works but I find it hard to do just yet on a consistent basis. Really prefer the easy way of speedpaints, but those days will be over soon enough.

Architectural Design? The full fledged degree, 5 years worth of it? If so, wow, I bow before you

I'm only doing this art thing seriously for 2.5 years, but it's going strong and I'm not stopping.

Dude, this is pretty freakin awesome. I love doing character design and always have trouble with backgrounds. This just may get me to start doing more backgrounds.

Backgrounds are awesome, support your other skills as well. It'll boost the appeal of your drawings to practice drawing backgrounds.

Thank you for the comment too

Creepy. Maybe a little too clean, especially the walls... Maybe stone blocks or old bricks would be more in theme than plaster (concrete?)? But i like it anyway

Thanks! The right amount of creepiness is still not there. Not going to dwell on this anymore, one must move to create newer stuff. However, thanks for the comment since they're applicable to future works as well

saltytowel In reply to curlyhair [2013-12-02 13:13:38 +0000 UTC]

I managed to screw it a bit during this work too, another 3 hours were invested in fixing it

TIP: Layers are freaking useful in saving time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

curlyhair In reply to saltytowel [2013-12-02 16:53:54 +0000 UTC]

I tend to work on 4 layers, top, but I merge everything at the process XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

saltytowel In reply to curlyhair [2013-12-03 20:00:56 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that's me. Sometimes more sometimes less

I just use the lasso a lot to move things around and it's hard to do so when so many things are on separate layers. Boo!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

curlyhair In reply to saltytowel [2013-12-05 08:40:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know XD I'm using SAI for painting, and it's awesome blending options and water tools work only on 1 layer. Besides - I just can't be accurate with many layers - I'm loosing track of myself and confusing layers, it screws with my painting flow, getting me annoyed, so I end up on one layer sooner or later.. But I'm keeping some progress files - just in case

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

saltytowel In reply to curlyhair [2013-12-12 12:27:29 +0000 UTC]

It's good to keep up the work flowing, too many layers and I'm brain dead as to what those layers do. Sometimes I'd have layers with nothing on them. It'd be strange indeed.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

curlyhair In reply to saltytowel [2014-01-28 07:03:22 +0000 UTC]

yeah, and I tend to confuse layers and paint on the wrong one (then getting mad on myself XD)
Β God, with that last comic page SAI has crashed on me for the first time. I've lost Chase, exactly when I've decided that he's done (about couple of hours of work >_<) I've almost cried there. Repainted him aggressively in half a hour (maybe less) but it was a nightmare.

Can't go wrong with this color scheme!Β EverythingΒ is so clean and yet..well not because it's a creepy lab. XD

I love that window. Your attention to detail, populating the space with props and stuff is to be admired. That's my biggestΒ hang-upΒ doing interiors.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

saltytowel In reply to daPatches [2013-12-01 09:29:11 +0000 UTC]

Not creepy enough though, that's the critique I got. Plus the ovals aren't exactly on spot (apparently not good at drawing so many of them and drawing them accurately).Β

Don't let this intimidate you, and don't be afraid to use references to study objects of interest. I googled for ancient looking lightbulbs and props from the old frankenstein movies to see how they presented the creepy lab technology of that time. I learned a lot and made hybrids of ideas that already existed without copying them directly, it's a way to study the material and fill your visual library with more diverse content.Β

Anyway, don't be afraid of research !

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

daPatches In reply to saltytowel [2013-12-02 15:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Haha I tend to get lost inΒ research! It's too much fun.

Yeah I don't fear or stigmatize referencing at all. I think it's just one of those things that I need to dive in head first with like I did the landscape stuff this time last year XD I can't fear sucking! Sucking at something is the first step to being sort of good at something after all! Once I get the time, I'll definitely sit down and do more than basic interior doodles. My biggest issue is proportion! I need to work on that most of all when it comes to man-made spaces.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

saltytowel In reply to daPatches [2013-12-03 20:10:28 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, good attitude right there. I sucked at landscape nearly a year ago, now, i'm sort of okay with those lol. More studies to be done!

I hate to do this, but I think that in order to become professionals, truly professionals, we need a healthy work process(es) that serve us well. Otherwise, we'll be trapped in counting too much on luck and mood.

I try to define myself times for everything. 1-2 hours for research and then stop. It's still hard to maintain that because I'm not used to clocking myself.
