Ah thanks! Glad you liked the process. It was part of the assignment, to include the process. I was the only one who actually wrote so much, the other students just posted their WIPs and the thumbnails.

Yeah, seems you really put all your efforts in it. And it worked out just awesome! Have you considered the idea of putting some more highlights on that character/body/corpse on the right. I really like it in your sketches, but it`s not so visible in final piece?

I did think of that but came to the conclusion that I don't want to draw attention to that corpse. He's not the important and plus that half seen corpse creates a more interesting atmosphere. More creepy, if you wish. The half seen stuff is more creepy than the completely lit up scene.

This is freakin' awesome! How did you do the lines digitally? They are so clean and refined, something I never can do with my tablet. I have to try out your value/color steps (multiply/overlay). I have always refrained from doing b&w first, I tend to do color right off the bat, without the values step, which is why I can't seem to keep any nice color gradation consistent.

What tablet do you have?
I used the "shift" key a lot to help me with most of the straight lines and planning the perspective. The ellipses and other stuff I had to do freehand. I actually got a critique that my ellipses were too pointy, hehe.
My teacher said that I should try to do some direct color ins too in my future works and not just color with overlay because it creates a bit of a digitalized look even though it's such a time saver.
I think you get better in time as you proceed drawing things over and over again, as you must know it yourself because your work reflects very good experience on your part

The "shift" key trick doesn't always work properly for me, regardless of which tablet I've used (Graphires, and now Intous). It works ok with pen pressure off, but the problem's really noticeable when I have pen pressure turned on. I have tried reinstalling drivers and photoshop, but the function just doesn't want to play nice. Basically, I just can't seem to find a more efficient and time-saving technique to ink digitally (outlines) without resorting to the pen tool and stroking the paths, which is downright tedious, stiff looking, and worst of all time-consuming. Doesn't help that the line weight isn't that flexible with that method. To hear that you manually drew the rest of the lines is really impressive since they look so clean.

Yeah, I advanced from graphire 4 to intuos 4 and then intuos 3 (which isn't an advancement but rather me being silly and selling my intuos 4 during hard personal times).
Listen, it took some time to get it down. I used to have a problem with my intuos 3 where my lines were never as smooth as I wanted. They had a weird and random spikes when I drew straight lines or just lines and I can fucking drawing straight lines with a pen or a pencil.
Maybe you have the same problem, I don't know. My intuos 3 is rather small (A5) so I put it before in the properties to be used in "mouse mode" - which doesn't map the whole tablet's surface to the screen but lets me drag the cursor around as though I was using a mouse with pressure sensitivity hehe. Only about 2 months ago I was struggling with lines and did experiment and put the tablet to "pen mode". Jeezus, it solved all my odd non-smooth lines in a moment. Maybe it'll work for you too.
Good Luck my friend, please let me know if that was at all helpful.

Yeah, that's not the same issue I have but I am glad that fixed it for you. I think the bottom line is that I just need train myself to keep the lines steady. Thanks for all of the help!

You're welcome. I guess we can both learn a lot from Feng Zhu's students, they learn to master the lines first.

Glad it could be of any help. It's one process that I started employing recently (the line thing in particular). Mind if you do a tutorial/walkthrough yourself? I'd love to see that.

Either way we learn from you or you learn from us as we help you with the process you're doing. So, if you can, it'd be awesome
