Description
NOTE: all icons and related mods from British Library can now be found here .NOTE: This is now old. Check out the 3rd edition!
British Library Unabridged.
SECOND EDITION
Containing 712 icons at a native resolution of 512×512 px.
This set is meant as sort of a catch up. It shall contain all icons from the previous primary Windows releases, plus a few more, to be released in PNG and ICO format. The ICOs have been rebuilt and now include all of the intermediary resolutions in RGBA—64×64, 96×96, &c. A few aren't actually 512, because they're status icons and stuff (generally 16×16).
The set itself will be released in the coming days. In another deviation. Or two.
(Why the gigantic preview image and lead-up? Why, because the other one is on my old account, it's out of date, and I didn't blow enough time making it, that's why!)
(The name I gave myself at the bottom reads "Samantha Wright the Blind" Well, literally it says 'right', not 'Wright,' but you get the picture.)
Also, I don't recommend clicking download unless you need to test your funky new image compression technology or something.
Maybe I should split this up into sets according to application/function... hmm... someday.
Links to various formats:
Windows (Up to and including Vista): samantha-wright.deviantart.com…
PNG (for skinning, Gnome, etc.): samantha-wright.deviantart.com…
Mac OS X (Up to and including Tiger): samantha-wright.deviantart.com…
Mac OS X (Up to and including Leopard): samantha-wright.deviantart.com…
The Leopard version should work on Tiger, but this is a) untested, b) much larger, and c) unnecessary.

DeviantArt was actually created to host software modding resources (including icons, themes, and wallpapers.) It's true there aren't many icon sets with more than five hundred icons (many artists release them one at a time), but, well, everything continues ad nauseam sooner or later.

That depends on a lot of things and unfortunately requires a lot of technical skill, unless you have a Mac.

Installing on Windows unfortunately still requires a considerable amount of technical expertise. To do it the easy way, get a program called IconPackager or something like it, and play around with it. I might also recommend getting the newest version of these icons instead of this old one.

Yes, of course! The Firefox icon is in the sixth row of the preview chart, and the Safari icon is in the seventh. Most applications are represented by books, but there's also a standalone compass on row 35. You can see the whole list by clicking on "Download Image" at the right.

i tried using liteicon to change my icons but certain icons wont change DD:
i realize this is probably because of liteicon and not cause of your icons, but do you have any idea of how i might change them?

Samantha-Wright In reply to BryonAkira [2010-09-15 01:07:52 +0000 UTC]
There are usually ways! There are some that flat-out can't be changed, like the graphics that Microsoft Office programs use internally, but most of them can be gotten. Which icons are causing the trouble?

Samantha-Wright In reply to BryonAkira [2010-09-15 05:12:20 +0000 UTC]
Well, you could try manually replacing the icons. If you command-click on most applications, you can open up their bundles (they're really folders) and replace the file directly. In the case of iTunes for example, it's iTunes.app\Contents\iTunes.icns. Another alternative is to shell out for (or pirate) CandyBar, which appears to be similar to LiteIcon.

Hello, Ms. Wright! May I have your permission to use your icon set for a Proboards skin? The website has yet to be made public, and I've written a brief credit to your work at the bottom of the page, but I worried you might take offense if I didn't notify you before-hand.
Thank you for your time! The link is included below:

Looks great, and sure! I've got a couple of niggles and suggestions, but other than that, you've totally got my permission. 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
- the background images in the nav items have been horizontally scaled directly; they may work out better if you only stretch the middle (this can be a little trickier to do depending on the program)
- Adobe Caslon Pro isn't a common font (Arno isn't that common either) and it actually doesn't display that well on PCs because of some hinting stuff. You might want to consider specifying a longer set of fallbacks, including things like just 'Garamond' (not Adobe Garamond, Adobe Garamond Pro, or Adobe Garamond Premr Pro; it's an MS font with really good hinting), 'Times New Roman', and of course 'serif', since you don't want your page being displayed in a sans-serif font by accident!
- The breadcrumbs (e.g. The Rising Crest :: General :: The Essentials ::
Also, nice animated background! Keep it up!
EimeliaWhitney In reply to Samantha-Wright [2010-08-17 01:44:42 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I will certainly take those comments into account.
Indeed, the Menu Bar options are temporary, and I will likely make alternatives soon.
As for the fonts, I had not thought about their rarity. Garamond seems like a wonderful option, and I will continue looking for others to use as substitutes.
The breadcrumbs pose a greater challenge to fix, though I had noticed their illegibility. The copyright text, however, should be less of a problem.
I appreciate your feedback, and will certainly look for your comics!

Samantha-Wright In reply to EimeliaWhitney [2010-08-17 15:35:45 +0000 UTC]
Heh, the comics thing didn't quite take off, but thanks. I'm glad to see you've got things under control, though!
Here's the lowdown on availability of fonts . It's a little outdated, and doesn't include second-tier availability things like the Monotype version of Garamond I mentioned, but it's pretty reliable. As a result, you may want to consider Palatino Linotype/Book Antiqua, though Palatino doesn't have as much history behind it as Garamond or Caslon do.

Woah. Just Woah. You're an amazing artist, you know that?
Have you ever thought of working on a gnome version of this icon theme? There's been lots of talk of a steampunk theme for ubuntu but nobody seems to be able to supply the icons for it... Methinks these would be perfect for the job...

Samantha-Wright In reply to RavenHunter [2009-12-07 18:54:50 +0000 UTC]
Really, all of my artistic skill is indebted to Google Image Search, but I suppose I came up with one or two of the things in here, so... thanks?
I did indeed recently think about Gnome, and in the near future I'm going to be doing a GTK+ icon set for another theme. In all honesty I'm a little intimidated by the prospect of taking on another whole OS, but if there's documentation out there for explaining what the icons do to someone who doesn't have much familiarity with the Gnome metaphors, I'm sure I could do a mapping. (Of course, all of this stuff is under Creative Commons for a reason, so if someone wants to do the work for me, I wouldn't stop them...)
However, if forced to live in the Free [software] World, I would probably end up using Gnome anyway, so I may just get myself an Ubuntu VM and work on that in a while.
(Maybe I just haven't made up my mind yet.)
Also of note: someone took a stab at an XFCE theme ages ago, but I don't really know what happened to it.

You mentioned Ubuntu VM. Try "Sun Virtualbox". Then all you need is an Ubuntu ISO and you can do whatever you like in a bunch of different OS's. Extremely simple, fast, and easy. ^_^

Samantha-Wright In reply to Royce-Barber [2009-12-26 05:00:50 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I've got no problems getting the tools. It's more like getting the gall to do so. Right now I have a complete GTK+ icon set, a WindowMaker theme, and a colour scheme for the Redmond (Win9x-ish) engine. I'm pretty darn happy with it, and a little wary of what remains to be themed in Gnome, so there's your standstill.
