Your dog body languages are a little inaccurate

Oh, sorry - can you please elaborate?

Nekter In reply to SammyTorres [2014-10-04 02:54:55 +0000 UTC]

Ok ell the dog panel at the top, the first example "surprised" is accurate the dog is showing attentiveness to something. "Disgusted, aggressive, reprimanded and afraid" are the ones that look inaccurate to me. "Disgusted, reprimended and afraid" would all fall under the same category which would be a small mixture of submission and anxiety.Β  "Disgusted and afraid" are submission, under disgusted the dog's ears are down and very subtly you can see the white of the dog's right eye. Now I don't know if this is your dog and you took pictures of it, but assuming the dog was given medicine like the description says: the dog is looking towards you but not making direct eye contact which is a form of submission asking "why are you messing with me? Why are you putting pressure on me?" That pressure being the medication. Unless you fed the dog the medication in with its food, in that case the pressure would come from something else. Under "afraid" the dog is baring the white of its eyes and its right ear is very slightly pointed to its right. So its attention is drifting but its still submissively keeping its body to the camera or otherwise its higher authority.

The "aggression" picture is not aggressive at all, the dog looks to be barking probably on queue. Just because the dogs mouth is open and you can see teeth on the jaw doesn't mean its baring its teeth. The eyes and ears of the dog are forward, which means the dog is alert. An act of aggression would be furrowing the brows, tightening of the lips, squared off body (though not possible to see in this picture) and possible baring of the teeth and/or ears back. Basically the stare of a predator.

For example, dogs you pass on the side walk that come barreling at you from across the yard barking like mad--aren't necessarily aggressive--can they be? Absolutely, not everyone treats their dog properly and from dumb owners you get aggressive dogs. But commonly these dogs running at you in someone's backyard are sounding an alarm which doesn't mean you couldn't walk up to the dog and pet it (never do that though). But an alarm bark sounds completely different than a bark from a dog with dangerous intentions, and the body language between an alarm and an aggressive dog is different too.

Then at the very bottom, the panel with the two dogs, the submitting collie is accurate, the other dog is giving pressure and the collie says ok I'll yield. The larger brown dog is not asserting dominance.
Her butt and tail are tucked, ears are back, tense body, she's stuck in a squat position. She's not being a confident, assertive leader she's nervous as hell. And the reason she snapped that the smaller collie is because she's nervous as hell, she's saying "hey, I'm uncomfortable, don't come up on me like that. Get away I want to be left alone." And the collie is saying "ok, I we don't need to fight I'll give you your space."

"Aggressive" is part of her description, but dominance isn't. A dog that assumes a leader status is confident: which would be tall posture (not in a squat), ears forward, eyes locked on the target, and any means to become higher than the submissive dog (such as raised tail, humping, putting a paw or arm on the lower dog's shoulder) and forcing the other dog to yield to pressure.

Kind of like when you're talking to your boss, your boss stands tall, walks with purpose, looks you in the eye and speaks with authority. Brown dog isn't telling me confidence, she's telling me fear.

Thank you for your elaboration... Must have taken some time to write it. The dog expressions at the top is just me writing what the photographer had written to the pictures. Perhaps you didn't find the aggressive picture as aggressive like you described but that's what it said under the picture. Links are in the description if you wish to find the source. I merely just did the research...
I like that you've described the other dogs very accurately, thank you very much for that. I hope you can understand that I only wish to write singe word descriptions since I wanted to cut that part short.
I'm sorry for the mistakes but thank you again for your time in correcting me ^_^

No worries dude, I hope you don't think I was trying to tear you a new one or anything. I know you're basically trying to convert human expressions into animal drawings, I just wanted to point out the descriptions didn't match what the animals were saying to me.

But anyways, you do good art.Β  It's been a pleasure.

This is great! I'll be sure to start challenging myself more with facial angles and expressions I'm not comfortable with.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that you draw a lot of body language from cats and dogs, but it's really cool to see how you turned your references into these cute, expressive dragons. The description is also fairly helpful. Thanks for putting this together!

Congrats on the DD, and have a nice day~
