Description
One of the best groups of the 1990s is one that never had any commercial success. A trio came out of the doom metal scene in Maryland with a sound reminiscent of the best parts of Black Sabbath. They did this without eschewing any originality. Their bluesy signature and simple heaviness make them a favorite of mine. This week's drawing is dedicated to Unorthodox.I heard them for the first time in 1994 when a room mate played their first album, Asylum. I really dug them. I never got to see them perform, as they've been on-again-off-again for the span of their existence. They were known as Asylum but dropped that name when another band with the same name got successful.
The drummer and bassist have been changed a few times over the years, but their singer and guitarist have always been Dale Flood. He's possibly the best among the metal guitarists who sprang from the same local scene. Another room mate of mine who was into Unorthodox and The Obsessed once quipped that Flood was, "like Wino with more practice." I think both Wino and Flood are amazing musicians and both have a signature vocal style. Flood's a bit closer in style to Ozzy. I'll let you decide: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBivo-…
