There is evidence that the sphinx is actually the egyptian jackal/dog. This is due to the sphinx statue being re-carved with the fashion of a later dynasty and not having a lion pose.

Wonderful use of blacks. The variation on the palate is elegant and subtle but brings an organic quality to the creature without sacrificing the elegance and regal nature you've baked into the design.
