Stargazing at the University - an Allegory

This is my first ever complete standalone digital painting.
Its been a humbling learning experience. Such is art.

It was painted 100% in Photoshop, from initial sketches to final product. It is 2 ft wide, and will be available for print shortly.

My original dream was to create an ode to environmental concept illustration - to everything I loved about this realm of artistic exploration.

Specifically, I wanted to create strange, sweeping and beguiling spaces, that allured and... disoriented... the viewer

The final result is an allegory, reflecting on the insights of religion and science, the conflict and the coincidences, and the mutual pursuit of truth, wonder and the mysterious.

I created this work - not for everyone - but for the few who would love it.

(May 3, 2009 - This project is now finished. Moving on!)

Very lovely. You can really feel the warmth here, but still cool, definitely a morning scene. I think it is the small glimpse of the world beyond, and the detail of this room, that make you want to climb in and stick your head out the window. Then go explore the other towers to see what they look like from the inside.

Much is open to interpretation here. Like the curtains; you could see them as being blown up or suspended by magic (being cast by the guy in the robes). The fog and the morning and the direction of the weather vanes don't lend themselves to a strong wind coming at us, so I am going with the magic angle. Besides, they wouldn't want these curtains falling in their faces when the wind died down. As well, those look like gnomish weather vanes (which tell the direction of the wind... on other planes .

Actually, the disparate architecture of the towers took me a while to realize. The leftmost one looks human, connected to an elven one, then in the right window the leftmost tower looks very militaristic (with its spiky vane) and the right more ceremonial and fanciful. So I see where you were going with the different towers being the different departments of the school. Very subtle =]

As for the allegory, it looks like magical science and religion are coexisting peacefully, or have at least agreed to disagree. I love the wizard's sleeve and the detail on the side of the cabinet. In my interpretation, the little golden dragon thing is actually the girl's instructor asking her what she can tell him about the star this morning =]

I really like how you can spend some time looking beneath the surface of this one to see the story it is telling, and I'm sure I missed some things myself. So great job Celeste!
