Description Wings of Freedom: That's basically it. I just wanted to make sure the wings were better proportioned. As with the Strike, it's not a real scene... just a checkup. I'm fairly satisfied with the modelling.

Wow, it's magnificent. The background really fits in to the dark. The lighting is really nicely done and it looks, especially the wings, so real I could touch it from here. Amazing job.

Keep up the good work. Definate Fav.

Love the mood set in this one! Absolutely the your best by far. Also I like the fact that you add decals and such to the Gundams. You do it in a good way and make it feel as though they belong.

jan-michael9500 [2006-12-18 04:00:32 +0000 UTC]

did you use a real model as reference when you made this one or did you just render it in the computer will all tools at your disposal to do what you did with this one?....

because i look at the gundam and see a fiberglass like feel or some polyesterine feel to the texture of the surface.... or is that part of the effects when you rendered it?

but, my inquires aside, it is a very beautiful picture! Made the Freedom Gundam just as sexy looking as the Gundam Wing Zero from endless waltz ^__^

sandrum In reply to jan-michael9500 [2006-12-18 05:40:10 +0000 UTC]

Both actually. I used the master grade plastic model as reference to make the computer model. The surface colors were baked into UV maps (saved as several PSD files) after which I also baked dirt into seperate UV's (I think most programs call this an occlusion pass). Though the anime tends to make the surface of the machines incredibly shiny/reflective, I rather like to think of it as a military machine and so tried to get red of the shiny stuff - but keep the anime feel....which is probably why it looks the way it does. it's something that I'm still even now trying to perfect.

jan-michael9500 In reply to sandrum [2006-12-18 06:18:59 +0000 UTC]

I believe the occlusion pass thing is somewhat similar to the mask tool in most softwares using a similar interface with adobe photoshop though I'm not quite sure about this. "Baked" in a sense giving a porcelain-like glow to it? or baked similar to the dodge tool highlighted mode in corel photopaint and adobe photoshop?

But on the side note, the anime does its best to make the gundams stand out their best when in focus. Keeps the fans wanting for more of the stuff, uber shines and special lighting angles. Hmmm... very interesting, I should give that a try once in a while and see what I can come up with.

sandrum In reply to jan-michael9500 [2006-12-18 07:40:01 +0000 UTC]

Occlusion might be different in 2d software. it tends to refer to a render consisting of "shadowy" properties, but that isn't really a very solid definition (sorry ). Ah, the glow was actually an increase in the GLOW setting for the surfaces. Baking is the process of rendering textures on to an image map (which almost makes no sense when it's explained that way) but it basically means that I can "bake" (render) lights, color and diffuse values into an image and just apply the image back to the model and rerender it in other ways, but keeping the same properties as before. This actually cuts down on the time to render a whole bunch (after the baking is done) - especially if I want to render multiple frames or multiple stances/camera views.

jan-michael9500 In reply to sandrum [2006-12-18 07:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, if I'm understanding it correctly, "baking" is when you have the surface color rendered BY the software onto points on the pic you have plotted on? Or is it rendering the hues of the shadows on that particular spot that have already a flat color washed on it? I'm getting confused

Baking is mostly the former, though you could probably bake the latter too.
