Description This is the GP01 (Zephyranthes) from the Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories OVA series. This is actually my favorite Gundam pretty much ever. Basically the same as the original Gundam with a sleeker body and upgraded technology. Not much on frills and firepower.

For references on this 3d mesh I used the GFF mostly. This is easily seen in areas like the lower leg, the back of the hand, the feet and the shoulder verniers where it doesn't match the MG version at all. Also in the rear of the waist where there exists a weapons carrier (like for the GM Command). Although the original design is by Shoji Kawamori, the MG and GFF were conceptualized by Hajime Katoki. However, Katoki's influence in the concept (in the MG manual) isn't recreated faithfully in the MG kit as it is in the GFF figure and so I went with mostly the latter in the end... though the MG was a great help. Finally, the weapon being held by the GP01 at the moment is the XBR-L-83d Beam Rifle used by the GP01 in the PS2 game "Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space".

Couple of errors that I don't have time to fix as I have to go to Sendai for the weekend: There was to be a dust effect on the ground, but the CPU was actually going into it's 40th hour of rendering so I cut it off since there's a blizzard due to hit soon, the beam sabers in the back shouldn't go into the upper body the way they are above and the right leg cuff is disappearing into the ankle. Very strange....

Anyway

Software: Lightwave3D (modelling, rendering), Hexagon (some UV's), Freehand (logos), Photoshop (post).

and...

Gundam is (c) Bandai/Sunrise/Sotsu Agency

Have a good weekend!

ooh nice render. Nice clean textures aswell. did you use procedurals on some stuff? like the shield?
nice model, nice lighting. Any different poses?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sandrum In reply to Dallas-Drake [2007-01-04 03:10:41 +0000 UTC]

There is a very light procedural on the texture that was generated by Photoshop though it seemed to me to be unintelligible from this vantage point. I'll have some poses in the future I hope! Thank you as well!

Dallas-Drake In reply to sandrum [2007-01-04 03:22:50 +0000 UTC]

well i noticed it, thats why i thought it was just totally procedural. its awesome anyway.

His arm looks like a giant M4.

Other than that, I like it (An XM-8 or a G36 would look better, personally).

Ah, I have no idea what any of those things you just mentioned are... but thank you, Joshua!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Seveur In reply to sandrum [2007-01-08 13:25:35 +0000 UTC]

Aye. An M4A1 is a standard army rifle for the USMC. An XM-8 is a newer all-purpose rifle (meaning that there are sniper, assault, carbine and Squad Auto Weapon versions of the gun). G36 is the standard issue German rifle, and is pretty much the same except that it doesn't have a sniper version of the gun. Both would have looked better, personally. Maybe run a google image search on them?

Don't mind me... I look into detail too much.

You're right! The gun featured in this image doesn't come with the MG, it's actually a special order item. Thinking about ordering it myself

asylumseaker [2007-01-03 03:42:04 +0000 UTC]

Looks awesome. Is it all rigged up for animation? I find its hard to get 3d stuff to look good when the surfaces are plainly textured with a smooth paint job like gundam suits are. But you've pulled it off just fine.
Except I think the gun is slightly under textured.

sandrum In reply to asylumseaker [2007-01-04 03:22:05 +0000 UTC]

Gundams for me are a "must rig" since they -especially this one- have more moving parts than I can keep track of without rigging. It tends to be less painful overall if I just go ahead and rig the IK setup and then fiddle with it instead of trying to moving things blindly. I'll see what I can do about the gun in the future
Thank you!
