Description
OOOOOkay, I have to go to Tokyo for the week to meet my fiance and after that the real fun begins with marathon training again. So before all that stuff happens I thought that I'd post where I am on the Minerva as of now. So, it's not finished at all, but it's getting close. If I ever come back and it gets done, I'll throw this image into scraps and render up a spankin new one.Subject Info:
This is the Minerva as featured in Gundam Seed Destiny. It's very much like the Archangel/White Base/Arghama in that it is a mobile suit carrier/battleship, but different in that it is built specifically to function as the mother ship to the Impulse Gundam, as the center catapult below the bridge houses the impulses palette based/modular launch system. It's also capable of sending storable energy via a Deuteron beam to the Impulse (or other suits that have the ability to recharge via that beam). It should be credited as being one of the luckiest ships in Gundam history. I'd personally love to destroy it, but I'll need it for the Freedom vs Impulse animation.
Image Info:
The 3D mesh was made in lightwave but based heavily on the scratch built plastic kit featured in the HOBBY JAPAN magazine (April 2005 ed) with the work done by Junji Funato. His seems to be a little off but it's the best reference that I could find. Also, extra detailed illustrations about the Minerva (specifically the Impulse Gundam's launch decks, the Impulse flyer palettes, Linear Catapult, and proton cannon) are outlined a few pages later in the same magazine. So it's kind of a lucky jackpot. Of course, this image is of the 3D mesh of the Minerva based on the images from the magazine. The scratch built model was done in 1/1200 scale, however, the mesh was created in 1/1 scale, so this model is actually (logically) 350meters long.
Left to be done:
Extra detail in the side linear catapults (not the ones for the Impulse, but the ones for the other mobile suits).
Overall detail on the hull
get rid of crusty bg
Lighting system for the Impulse catapult
complete Impulse's palette system
resolve mysteriously disappearing bump maps
change placeholder textures (makes the ship look too small)
see ya!
Software: Lightwave 8.3 (modelling/ rendering)
Gundam is (c) Sunrise/Bandai/Sotsu Agency

ooh nice render, I like the textures
"It should be credited as being one of the luckiest ships in Gundam history"
I think that should go to the Archangel actually, I mean, so many ZAFT (and EAF) teams have pursued and tried to destroy it and failed, both in SEED and Destiny... and it survived the positron cannon being aimed at it three times (twice thanks to Mwu), and head-to-head combat with the Dominion and the Minerva. So I'd say it's pretty darn lucky
Anyway, enough of my rant, I can't wait to see this fully finished and all decked-out

Ah, really I was just referring to Minerva as lucky on an Offensive standpoint, being able to hold back hordes of enemies at any time. The archangel is quite lucky too, you're right

hmm, its just stupid of me if i don't say that you're one big perfectionist. then again, in 3D you have to be. if this equals to a sketch, then, damn, can't wait for the full rendered piece.

You have already done quite a job at this stage and look forward to see what you can come up with the finalised version.

Looks nice
The texturing looks kinda funny though.. I see patches all over.. I think it's a problem with the stretching of the textures.

sandrum In reply to if-i-nvr-knew [2006-09-09 05:38:27 +0000 UTC]
no texture stretching, just a fractal texture sitting in the diffuse channel that I didn't get rid of before render time. It's not supposed to be there.

all that reference stuff in 1 place, handy
with something like this i've always wondered just what is the degree of acuracy on your technical drawings for the measurements into lightwave?
impressive model, though I kinda wish that (with all the other anime i've been watching) i could realte it to smnt i know, since i've only watched gundam wing. though i suppose its good to see stuff where you don't have much of an idea about it. then you just see it for what it is rather than all the ideas around it. yea i started to ramble again

sandrum In reply to oldoneeye [2006-09-09 05:37:03 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Yeah, I wouldn't put much stock into the accuracy of anything that I've made in terms of constructing a replica in real life, but lightwave is capable of pulling out relatively accurate measurements if need be.

ooo handy, though i wonder if the ultimate goal of a modeler/animator is to achive a high level of artistic style of a high level of accuracy, i suppose it depends of the requirements.

Shidaku [2006-08-21 00:30:25 +0000 UTC]
It may just be the general shape of the Minerva, but I always thought the "space-shuttle front-end" was way too big, the ship looked hirrbly overbalanced...or at lest designed to seperate into two ships...ya know, escape ship deal.
looks pretty nice though, whats with the wavy pattern all over it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
sandrum In reply to Shidaku [2006-09-09 05:34:08 +0000 UTC]
Ah, the wavy pattern is the result of a fractal texture inadvertently placed in the diffuse channel of the surface settings. It's definately not supposed to be there...
