Description While trying on promo outfits I came up with a simple leather shader which utilizes built-in Iray normals.

Thanks, was sort of waiting for that sort of tips for old textures.

What does Dual Lobe Specularity actually do, speaking abstractly? Does something to the highlights, that much is clear, and how they reflect and scatter light, and apparently on two layers. Anything beyond that, how does this come into play with leather in particular?

Dual Lobe is kind of a sophisticated replacement for the Glossy layer. It works by processing broad and sharp highlights separately and then combining them.
