Description This is Ferrus Mane, Primare of the Iron Hooves on the fields of Istvaan V (I'm not sure if there's a more pony-ish version of the place.). Definitely my favourite Primare at the moment, she's just so... well, she's massive and she's got a big hammer thing, yay!

Was just trying to get myself back into the groove of doing CG paintings, and I think it turned out all right. Critiques are most welcome, as I'm trying to improve one of my weaker areas of art. ^_^

-----

On another note, if I did do another Primare, who should it be? Also, if I put this up for prints, would anyone buy it? Cheers. XD

That's a great idea! ^_^

I have done one Sister of Silence so far, so I might mess around with them a little more when I need to. ^_^

Cool! You need a Lion el'Jonson! And unlike the rest. A Stallion. Something to set the 1st Legion apart.

Wasn't he kind of stuck up?  Even before his corruption, Horus couldn't STAND him.  He told the remembrancer was writing his bio that Jonson would use any opportunity to remind others he was the FIRST Primarch recovered; that his Legion was designated FIRST Legion.

Actually other way around. Horus was found first, but the Lion was oldest and his DNA was used to create the 1st Legion. The 1st Legion was the Emperors personnel legion up until he found Horus and then the Lunar Wolves and the 1st Legion worked together for a time before he worked with the Lunar Wolves more.
The Lion seems to have a odd mindset. Honor and duty are his watchwords, but he is jealous type and untrusting type. He couldn't understand why Horus was named Warmaster when his accomplishments were as great as Horus's and he was the eldest and he was in fact somewhat a better planner than Horus was. Horus by comparison was a naturally nice guy who seems to have few real flaws.
And he didn't trust the Terran Born Marines he inherited from the Emperor but trusted the Caliban-born more because the Terran-Born loyalty's were to the Emperor first and not the Lion himself. He even modified there paint schemes to differentiate between the two with Dark Angel Green highlights added to the Caliban-born warriors while the Terran-born ones kept the original all black Power Armor Scheme. If you look at it, Luthor led the mostly Terran-Marines into rebellion on Caliban because they wanted to abandon Caliban and rush to Terra to reinforce the Emperor.

I would LOVE a Forge World set of rules and models for the Legio Custodes.  Aside from being awesome-looking, their lifestyle and purpose make them a truly incorruptible Imperial force.  If you use them, you serve the Emperor, not the moldy carcass of post-Heresy culture.    There are no red-on-red battles...unless somehow you play against another complete Custodes army.  And what are the odds of that?

Give Forge World Time. The various sourcebooks there doing are focused on the Legions but eventually they will do Terra and I bet then we will have the Custodes and the Emperor himself as models and rules.

Oh, yeah:  Horus WAS found first.  How did I forget that?  BTW, I've  only read the first 5 Heresy novels, so my detail knowledge only goes so far.  I got the rest from the Black Library volume of Horus Heresy game artwork.  It had a condensed narrative.

I played from Rogue Trader up until about late 4th Edition. The Rules creep finally killed the game for me and I was a big Dark Angel player. I still read the Horus Heresy novels though and when Forge World puts out a Lion figure I will get and paint it. From the books the Lion gets a very odd personality. All noble and honorable and then out of left field the jealousy shows up out of nowhere. There is a scene in one novel where its noted that where Horus would use a massive army to destroy a obstacle the Lion uses a small force and much smaller losses to do the same. It also shows him jockying for the Warmasters mantle when Horus falls.

*shrug*

What can I say?  I like Vulkan best, anyway.  He and his chapter are a rarity: humble First Founders, who undertake the defensive and humanitarian missions 'beneath' other Astartes.   They understand that in the end, they are humanity's servants just like the Guardsmen are.

Sturmlion1 In reply to NO-SoupForYou [2015-09-19 23:12:16 +0000 UTC]

Vulkan never interested me. He just seemed bland and his entire army was just these lighter green armored dudes for a long time. Than they did a dragon motif and a blacksmith bit for a while. Interesting but never enough to hold my attention. Oddly enough when it came to other Legions it was Perturabo that I liked. A Siege Master and one that went out of its way to not fall to the Demonic Influences at first and looked down on the Primarchs and Legions that had.  Plus he is the opposite of Rogal Dorn. And I never liked Rogal Dorn, the HH novels make him the epitome of arrogance and I hated it. Even his Legion all these centurys later are still less demonic than other legions.

Is it weird they evil primarchs hold more fascination than most of the loyal ones? Heck, in one short story Horus even laments that of the Primarchs that followed him he wouldn't have even picked them as there all 'broken' in some form and he would rather have the likes of the Lion, Rogal, and Sanguinius than Primarchs like Angron, Fulgrim, and Night Haunter. He does this to Ferrus Manus's skull that was mounted on his throne. Horus was a bit bonkers by this point I think...

Aye.  I especially mourn the fall of Magnus and the Thousand Sons  (loved their pre-Heresy look).

Am I imagining it, or did Russ exceed the mandate of his orders by leveling Prospero itself?  I believe he was only given orders to destroy the Thousand Sons.

Of the First Founders, I find the Ultramarines most distasteful... if only because GW continues to direct their heaviest focus on a Chapter and Primarch with absolutely no character.  Not even a 'shtick'.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sturmlion1 In reply to NO-SoupForYou [2015-09-20 17:58:35 +0000 UTC]

Russ did exceed his mandate. But if you look his orders were changed before he hit Prospero. The Emperors orders were to bring Magnus to Terra (it looks like the Emperor planned to sit Magnus on the Golden Throne to control the Imperial Webway project & Astronomicon) and confine the Thousand Sons to there Homeworld. The orders were changed by Horus. Horus who had not started his rebellion yet. He knew Magnus would not support him unless he had no where else to go. So he forced events to cut Magnus off from the Imperium. And when it came to the Demonic, Magnus and his Legion would have been a powerful force against Horus and the Chaos Gods he had aligned with.

A almost perfect strategist. Horus.

The Ultramarines were always meant to be the Vanilla Marines. Perfect Toy Soldiers led by a most perfect toy soldier and statesmen. You would think the Emperor would have favored Guilleman over the other Primarchs for the sheer size of his legion if it didn't really come down to that he was in reality not that imaginative and very stuck in his ways. But his loyalty was guaranteed. Which is why it looks like the two missing legions were probably folded into the Ultramarines.

In one book with Corax as the main Primarch it comes out the Emperor had a plan for each Primarch once the Crusade was over and he didn't need soldiers anymore. Guilleman the Administrator, Fulgrim the Architect, Lorgar the Herald, Magnus to control the Astronomicon, Vulkan and Ferrus to replace Mars, Corax had been wondering what job the Emperor had intended for him and some of the more broken of his brothers. He couldn't see a civilian job for some like Angron or Mortarion or Khan.

Well, we still have the Blood Ravens.  That's SOMETHING.

Apropos of nothing, by studying various 40K Codexes, Rule Books, and Black Library mock-artifacts, I've come to a strangely satisfying revelation.

Just about every misery that afflicts the 40K setting can be laid at the feet of the Necrontyr race.

I find it oddly pleasing that that galaxy isn't naturally such a twisted place.

Sturmlion1 In reply to NO-SoupForYou [2015-09-20 20:33:06 +0000 UTC]

Blood Ravens, a video game chapter. Bah!

And yes, the Necrontyr are to blame for a whole hell of a lot. But the Imperium of Man has only the Emperor to blame for how things are in 40k. All he had to do was tell his Primarchs WHY he was returning to Terra when he did and Horus and the rest wouldn't have had a hissy fit when he cut out of the Great Crusade early. His secrecy doomed the Imperium and whats worse, it really wasn't warrented.

NO-SoupForYou In reply to Sturmlion1 [2015-09-22 17:30:23 +0000 UTC]

The Blood Ravens have since been established by Black Library novels as a chapter that likely originated as Thousands Sons loyalists and changed their identity to avoid reprisals.  Even given their weak connection to the main franchise, you must admit it's a nice idea.

And if the Necrontyr had not coalesced the C'tan to fight The Old Ones, the Old Ones would not have been forced to rapidly engineer psychically active races.  Krork, Eldar, Humans, Enslavers, and Tyrannids.... all Old One creations.  Without all that sudden metal noise, the Warp would have been trippy but benign.  No Chaos, and so no chance of the Heresy as we know it.
Can we talk about this further on my profile's comment page?  This is the comment bar where people are discussing a picture of a horse in powered combat armor.  I think we've digressed :3

I'll definitely do the Lion at some point, along with the rest of the Primares.

As to whether she/he would be a stallion, I'm not sure. I don't really see a reason for it tbh. If you do have something to justify the gender change from the rest of the Primares, I'm all ears. ^^

Sturmlion1 In reply to Sanity-X [2015-04-23 17:16:29 +0000 UTC]

Not really a reason. Just something to make him different. He was a Knight and a warrior though on Caliban. And Knights are dude's, not Dames, and a Dame is a female title of Knight. Besides, every herd of Mare's needs a Stallion. And who better than the oldest?

Actually of them all, Angron and Fulgrim should be dudes. Angron for the sheer Big Mac size and strength and Fulgrim for the sheer pretty boyness he was known for.

Leman Russ!  Best translation I have found is "Beloved/King of the Russ" most in reference to the Russ Norse/Scandanavian Mercenaries who had explored and seen from Western Europe All the way to Byzantium, and were the origin of Russia.

As per the Critique, I would Totally Field a unit of Space Mare-ines if they lived up to the art you've rendered here. While I think the shading may be a tad dark, leading to perhaps a slight loss of detail, the overall Stoic nature of the Character and scene still comes through wonderfully.

I was definitely thinking of drawing a horde of Morlocks around Ferrus at the time, but by the time I was done with the colours, it was already 3am and I was plum tuckered tired. In retrospect, I should've done more planning with the composition of this piece, but it pretty escalated from a curious sketch to what it is now really, really quickly.

I don't usually come back to paintings that are already done, but I just might make this the exception, with Ferrus being my absolute fave Primare atm. XD

Once again, you strike gold Sanity.  I'd say this turned out quite good.  Excellent armor design as always.

As for which Primare to do next...well I'd say the one you want to do most.  If you don't have a preference though, perhaps Volcapple(Vulkan) or River Lillymane(Roboute Guilliman) would be interesting to see next.

My other personal fave Primares (at least, the ones I haven't drawn yet) would probably be, hmm... let me give this some thought.

Although, have you revised the names of some of the Primares? If so, I would so love your new take on their names. ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RunicArbiter In reply to Sanity-X [2014-03-03 15:04:36 +0000 UTC]

Well I only remember revising two names.

One was Lillymane's first name.  At first she was called Robust Lillymane, but...it just seemed like an odd name, to me at least. I eventually thought the name River Lillymane.

Another name I revised was Sphinx's name.  Originally, she was called Sphinx El'Jumper, but the 'Jumper' made no real sense.  I then came up with a better name, Sphinx El'Joysun, which I then shorten to Sphinx El'Joy

So...

Robust Lillymane is now River Lillymane

...and...

Sphinx El'Jumper is now Sphinx El'Joy

There are other things I've twitched and changed about the Primares.  Some of it isn't major, and I won't bother you with the details.  However, there are some changes you might be interested in.  If you like, I'll send you a note with the details.

PS. It might take me a little while to make the note, so if you what to know which Primares they are so you can save them for later, they are:

Scholar(Logar), Comrade Curse(Konrad Curze), Camouflax(Corax), Volcapple(Vulkan), Javabean Khan(Jaghatai Khan), and Lemon Rush(Leman Russ).
