Description
I have made a pastel tutorial, because some people haveasked me to do so and I could not even find a pastel tutorial at
DA, which quite surprised me. There were some links, but you know what they say: out there be monsters
What a lovely surprise to be on DA facebook's frontpage.
The amount of comments is heartwarming.
I will answer all in time, and thank you very much
And now a DD as well, oh wow
These are the pastels I use
Soft pastels
Hard pastels
Bubo virginianus, Great Horned Owl.
The lovely reference picture is from
Thank you Nuna for letting me use it.

Fantastisch!

Thanks so much for this tutorial, I had no idea of the existence of the paper you used...I'm gonna give it a try! Question for you, (I know it's dumb, but I gotta ask! ). How do you transfer the drawing to velours?

Velourspaper is really ideal for soft pastels.
It's not a stupid question at all,
I make my sketch on ordinary paper, when I'm finally satisfied (it really has to be ok)
with that I turn my paper around and use the flat side of a soft pastel to smear to whole backside of the paper.
Then lightly tap the paper to get with of too much pastel.
Then lay you paper on the velours and start tracing, use little pressure or you'll indent
the velours.
Try to keep your drawing hand sort of in the air, so it doesn't press the on the paper.
I find that the hardest part
Goodluck.

wow, thank you very much for this! Just learning pastels after years of working only with graphite pencils, and finding them quite an unruly and challenging but exciting medium )
Question for the teacher: Do you ever use pastels pencils?

Sarahharas07 In reply to LuthienneTinuvielle [2013-02-16 07:48:44 +0000 UTC]
Hi, thank you very much, glad you like it.
When working on the velourspaper I don't use pastelpencils.
But I recently made a drawing using only pastel pencils, it's a caracal and he's on my frontpage. I've used Mi Teintes paper for that, but I'm new with pastel pencils, and still experimenting.

I loved reading your tutorial. I've only used Soft Pastels on paper resembling fine sandpaper. I use oils on velour and love the way it comes out.
Now that I've seen your work I want to experiment more with Soft Pastels (I wasn't a fan really...but I love velour).
Your work is beautiful and very detailed
I look forward to seeing more ^_^

I've never used oils so I wouldn't know anything about that.
The soft pastels are messy, but I love the results especially on velours paper
