Description
I have made a pastel tutorial, because some people haveasked me to do so and I could not even find a pastel tutorial at
DA, which quite surprised me. There were some links, but you know what they say: out there be monsters
What a lovely surprise to be on DA facebook's frontpage.
The amount of comments is heartwarming.
I will answer all in time, and thank you very much
And now a DD as well, oh wow
These are the pastels I use
Soft pastels
Hard pastels
Bubo virginianus, Great Horned Owl.
The lovely reference picture is from
Thank you Nuna for letting me use it.
You can find the photo here [link]

This is really great, especially the feather details. I love pastel drawings and still don't understand how people use them. I've tried many materials but pastels are the only that I can't handle at all. How big is the final drawing by the way?

Thank you very much, the drawing is A4 size

Very amazing work and great detail! I have 2 questions for you, what would you suggest to a beginer how to get better in your medium, and how did you make the picture look so clear?

Sarahharas07 In reply to rujiidragon [2012-12-12 20:36:55 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much
To get better I would say practise, practise and practise whatever medium you use.
The photo is clear because the drawing is clear. The drawing is clear because I've used clear colours. I made the photo's with daylight. Does that answer your questions? Or do did you mean something else?

Thankyou for your time and information, I have another question for you if you don't mind, did you scan the picture or did you take a photograph of the picture?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Sarahharas07 In reply to rujiidragon [2013-01-02 06:57:02 +0000 UTC]
I made the photo's with my camera. If you want to scan pastelwork, you have to clean your glass after every scan because small particles of pastel will fall off.
And no I don't mind your questions at all

I am so gonna try this out Do you think it could work with ordinary colour-pens as well?
I Love it!

Thank you so much, I really don't know if this will work with colour-pens I've never used them.

Thank you for this amazing tutorial! I have always thought of pastels as being terribly messy and not precise, but now I see that's just because of how I was using them! When I pick up my pastels again, I'll definitely look to this tutorial for advice.

You are most welcome and I hope you'll find a way to use your pastels like they should be used, you'll find they are a lovely medium. It will always be rather messy on your desk though
