well, I can't claim to be all that surprised by the end of LoK, and a decent ending it was. I must confess, however, to being really disappointed about Amon being a lying liar who lies, and pretty much a faker using and manipulating nonbenders (with a pretty valid point) for his own revenge. so here is a ridiculous scenario for what Noatok might have been up to between leaving the North Pole and starting the Equalist movement in Republic City to help me cope, lol.

and yes he's bloodbending those poor tigersnakes, though nobody knows it. creep.

Avatar belongs to Bryke and Nickelodeon.

He may be lying and using bending (which is hypocritical since he views bending as evil) but I truly believe he thinks that ridding the world of bending would make things better.
Yes he is a liar who uses bending to take away bending, but I do not think he did it to be the sole bender and rule the world (lol that would be awesome and scary at the same time)
He was all for equality and he made valid point about benders abusing their power and oppressing non-benders.
At the very least, he believed what he preached, and maybe he would give up bending once and for all.
I do agree that keeping Amon as a powerful non-bender would have been amazing simply because I cannot think of any way to stop him if he was a non-bender. You could not remove his bending like Aang did with Ozai and Yakone, and he would never be captured so jail is not an option. I could not see any way for Korra to win, which made Amon very threatening.
In a way, it may be simpler for fans who are upset with his identity to just separate Amon and Noatak and count them as 2 different people. I know, not possible right? Well, Amon is still a powerful "non-bender" revolutionary while Noatak is a powerful waterbender who shared Amon's views.

On the other hand - Circus!Noatak FTW!
I really wanna know what Amon did during the 20 or so years before founded the equalists

Except for the fact that we never actually SEE any Benders oppressing Non-Benders. Though I would have liked for them to keep Amon and Noatak separate.

Was it ever stated that Ty Lee learned chi-blocking before she joined the circus?

"you knew from the start that she was pretty much a sociopath"

Yes, but people still misinterpreted her and underestimated her loyality to what she we considered as her family.

"it calls his motivations into question and throws doubt on the entire movement, blackening something that was a fantastic shade of grey."

Violent, revolutionary movements are usually like that and their leaders are often (correctly) accused of working to increase their personal power instead of working to further to achieve the goals of their organisations.
Amon's portrayal did not try to give us a clear answer whether he wanted power for himself, was a true believer like the other high-ranking Equalists or both.
It is a nice contrast to the portrayals of Zhao and Ozai who were just power hungry tyrants.

"but Azula is totally different"

They are not as different as you think. Both were scarly competent, crafty antagonists who were later humanized by their backstory.
Not to mention, both had a fairly complex relationship with their sibling who later turned out be their undoing.

wow. you are taking this all...very seriously o_O

re ty lee and chi-blocking: i don't think canon ever indicates when or where she learned it, unless it was mentioned in an interview or something. does it really matter? it was enough of a tangential connection to seem interesting to me.

re Azula being a sociopath and totally different from Amon: ok, when I said it was totally different with Azula, I meant more that the viewer 'relationship' with the character was much different, not that they had absolutely nothing in common. you're bound to find common ground between any two characters if you look hard enough, especially if they're created by the same people.

re Amon being greyer than Ozai: yes he was. i was still disappointed in him, and i still feel that we were given a really great, deep setup, that was flattened in the end. that's not to say it wasn't a good series, just that it didn't develop in directions i hoped or expected.

I was disappointed that Amon was a fraud too. And the backstory didn't clarify his motives. He may have been out for revenge, but I like to think that he really wanted everyone to be equal (except he would be more equal than everyone else, of course). Meh, I'll have to watch the episode again, because everything happened so fast that I probably missed something.

But lying antagonists are awesome. Just look at Azula.
Amon's real backstory gave him an unusual yet understandable reasoning to dislike bending.

but Azula is totally different! with her, you knew from the start that she was pretty much a sociopath, even if she did become a little more pitiable at the end. with Amon, though his methods were questionable, it was completely plausible that he was an earnest guy with a just cause. i wanted to belieeeeve

what i mean is, I guess, is that I could completely sympathize with the Equalists, but as the figurehead of that cause, Amon's reputation is bound to the reputation of the cause. Azula lied and hid her identity to gain advantage over her enemies, but she was exactly what she represented to us, the audience. her lying is completely in line with her position as a vicious leader of a vicious invasion. with Amon, the revelation that he is a bender of the worst sort is a betrayal to those who followed and depended on him. it calls his motivations into question and throws doubt on the entire movement, blackening something that was a fantastic shade of grey.

If I may, it seemed fairly obvious to me that the guy really did hate bending; given his backstory, it's not that hard to see why.
Plus, Tarrlok kind of said so.

yeah, I know, but it just...idk, it didn't settle very well with me. i think it's part the hypocrisy, and part the deception. here he's going on about how bending is used to oppress, and sure enough, he's going around using his own bending to strip others of theirs. and then at the end, when it became clear that he had not even come clean to his second in command, and basically just threw the guy away and ran for it instead of trying to salvage things or explain...idk. i get it, i think he's a complex and rather messed up and well-formed character, but i lost my respect for him after that.

The circus also explains why Amon's army consisted of countless chi-blockers.
After all, the only chi-blocker of the previous series was a "circus freak" and must have learned this technique from someone else from her circus.

nope ty lee went to school and learned it she went to Royal Fire Academy for Girls with mai and azula
she was a kid back then when she learn it
when she grew up she went to circus because As a child, she dealt with six sisters that shared an identical appearance to her, which caused Ty Lee to feel a loss of individuality, a longing to be a distinct, recognizable person, and a desire for attention from other people
