Description
This is my 9th (?) piece for my AP concentration on bugs, so this is a snail about to be squashed by a foot. No animals were harmed : )This is ink painting and gesso on grey paper.
I'm not sure if I'm done yet, so if you have any critiques at all, I'd love to hear them!!

Maybe the rubber soles were made in China, so it wouldn't necessarily be even if the mold was pulled too quickly.
Great job. I immediately like this one...my fave!

I love this.
Amazing details on the shoe bottom, although this must be the cleanest shoe ever.
I don't think that the light source hurts the overall effet other than the snail should probaly be in more shadow.

thanks!!
I toyed with the idea of adding some dirt or something, but I thought clean would look better in this case. plus, the shoes are pretty new, so they aren't that dirty anyways.
and I did put the snail in some darker shaddow but never took a picture, so yay!

Clean probaly is better, the whole "I already steped in something" probaly would not help anything here. Suppose they will be clean until the actual stepping is done. >.<
Yay, indeed.

Heey, I really like the detailing on the shoe and the snail. :] Critique-wise, I second the shadows thing and add that I feel a horizon line would be helpful. The back foot especially looks like it's floating.
Just a thought.... snails aren't insects. o-o;;;

thanks!
I know a snail isn't an insect, neither are spiders, but in my mind, they can all be bugs for the purposes of my concentration

No animals were harmed... yet! XD
To further define the light source, this might be helpful... the (from the viewer's point) left side of the sole has the same white as on the right side. Nevertheless, underneath the sole, the light seems to be cast from the right side. - On the snail's body and shell, it seems to be cast from the left side again. Maybe setting the light source to the left underneath the sole would help?
BUT I love the detailed work and the realistic style here! It makes a "small" and common scene seem so dramatic.

yeah, I see what you mean... I actually considered the light source when taking the reference pic, but I agree that it needs to be more clear
thanks so much for the crit!!

I dunno, I kinda think the reflected light would be enough to cause the light source to look change under the shoe. The only thing that bothers me is the unevenness of the lines in the middle of the shoe. They look like they were done too quickly since they're not parallel like the ones closer to the viewer.

SaraSchool In reply to KamatzArkeaa [2009-03-27 22:37:15 +0000 UTC]
yeah, I see... I did them quickly and didn't go all the way across because the ink would have been too dark and comanding if the lines weren't made quick. but it is sort of distracting because the other aspects of this are pretty sharp... or do you mean the lines on the two sides of the diamond? either way, I sort of messed those up, and there isn't much turning back, as it's ink. but for the lines under the diamond pattern, I think I will darken the area so that it isn't as obvious.
thanks lots again for the crit!!

KamatzArkeaa In reply to SaraSchool [2009-03-28 00:14:23 +0000 UTC]
Yea the ones on the sides of the diamond pattern are fine. The ones underneath are a little distracting because they're not even like the others. Other than that I think it's a fantastic composition!

marinated-fish In reply to KamatzArkeaa [2009-03-27 20:59:37 +0000 UTC]
Hum, you propably got a point. The light source change doesn't afflict the overall composition that much, after all. I agree in term of the lines.

I like this a lot!
I think you should add some more definitive shadows to bring out the light source more, it seems kinda scattered as it is.
But snails scare me ;~;
not as much as slugs, but they're still ickyyyyyy
