Description
Assignment 2 for Advanced Drawing for Animation.Assignment was to create a few anatomically believable mounts and riders. The more you created, the better.
I really could have gone so out of this world with mounts...its a really easy subject for me...but I decided to stick with doing concepts I could use for the story I'm working on. These were the best designs I came up with.
Based on multiple prehistoric and modern animals.
Watercolor on Illustration Board, 30 x 20 inches

Thank you ^^ I actually have a design based on Kaprosuchus and Araripesuchus, as well as a few other beasts, here sargassosart.deviantart.com/ar… Its not specifically a mount though, more like a savage guard dog critter.

I love your indricotherium's color scheme. Much more interesting than the grey that they tend to usually be portrayed as.
Also love the...giant thylacine?...mailcarrier one.

Thank you very much! ^^ In the story/world I've been working on, I'm using a lot of modified prehistoric critters, and my "horses" are based off of a few prehistoric rhinos, so when I did this, I thought I'd test out what horse-like colors and patterns would look like on them, rather than just grey heavy skin, or even just solid mud brown. I quite liked the way it turned out
The mail-carrier is based on a creodont (like hyaenodon) but I suppose it does look like a thylacine...It must be the tiger-wolf look XD He's one of my personal faves, I'm trying to pump out a short horror-comic based on him...Unfortunately, work has kept me from touching many personal projects :/ Ain't that always the way.

heh...I think it was the markings and the fact that I have thylacines on the brain a lot lately (I love them for some reason...I seem drawn to extinct (or supposedly extinct) creatures). I knew it was too big to be an ACTUAL thylacine...but...you know...fantasy.

I did a search for Indricotherium drawings and I'm so happy I came across this! I love the colors and poses! There totally should have been some kind of 80's/90's animated tv series based on this. I'm thinking it would have fit in the same vein as Captain Planet nicely.

Wow, thanks! ^^
Admittedly, I'm glad it looks interesting enough to spark thoughts like that, considering its all concept art for a comic I'm working on at the moment Here's hoping the finished product is as likable

XD You aren't alone in that. With all the andrewsarchus comments I've gotten, I still want to draw one to match this set. I just need to find the time to do it

its the heads they look so alike that its easy to confuse them if you dont look at the feet.

Lets see...
Gorgonopsid? Awesome and genius.
Indricotherium?
Gull-gryphon? Albatross-gryphon?
White rhino?
Hmmm..... Andrewsarchus? Hyaenodon?
These are so cool and original. OTL I love both prehistoric fauna and designing cool mounts, but don't merge those two very often or very well. Must take some cues from you sometime.

Thanks very much! ^^ And great job with the naming Albatross Gryph and Hyaenodon for those two. It was a ton of fun designing these.
Thanks again!

SargassosArt In reply to GrypheoClock [2012-02-26 00:54:58 +0000 UTC]
That would be a wandering albatross with a generic cat-like base. I was aiming for a bit of white lion, but it kind of just became generic feline. Most of my gryphons tend to end up that way

Thanks I was trying to think outside the box a bit, to things that either weren't seen very often, or to different variants of common things (like the gryphon). Thanks very much!

That one is actually supposed to be based on the creodont Hyaenodon But given the sudden burst of replies I got suggesting andrewsarchus on this, I think I may have to draw one, asap >.> Of course...I'm not complaining
Thanks ^^

Very close! Right on the Indricotherium, but the other two are an Inostrancevia Alexandri (gorgonopsid) and a Creodont (based on Hyaenodon)
Thank you!
