Description
I want to create my own version of the Expanse TV series + Mass Effect. So you probably can call it crossover-fanfiction.
No FTL, No Aliens (except micro-cells in Europe, Titan and Enceladus), No Super-destructive AI.
Ganymede was the first of the Galilean moons to be explored by humans and one of the first permanent human settlements in the outer planets, effectively making Ganymede the crest of Jovian Civilization. It is the only moon with any magnetosphere, ability to deflect charged ionizing radiation, making it the only place where dome-grown crops stood a chance in Jupiter's harsh radiation belt besides Callisto. It can be thought of as a place of harvest, and definitely a lynch pin in food economy in the belt. Large mirrors were placed around the moon, most likely to supply the Sun's light to the surface for crop growth. The magnetosphere helps claim the Jovian moon the lowest amount of birth defects and stillbirths. This being the case many women come to Ganymede to deliver. It is the center of what made human expansion to the outer planets possible.
The largest settlements: Medici (capital of JC), Heihe,
Callisto was officially settled in 2168 AD, being the second of the Jovian moons harbor human colonies. It was a frigid mining colony for many years, with many cities growing on the surface and underground. While it was far enough away from Jupiter to be safe from its harsh radiation belt, it was too far away from Jupiter’s reflected sunlight to make greenhouses a profitable business. The Callistonians resorted to purchasing most of their food from Ganymede and Europe like the rest of the Jovian moons. Prior to independence, Callisto was infamous for its prisons and corporate use of prisoner labor.
The largest settlements: Kalidasa, Roanok
Unlike some of Jupiter's moons, Io isn't shielded from the gas giant's massive radiation, with a standard vac suit being insufficient to protect its user. This, combined with its tectonic instability makes it rather unsuitable for human habitation. In fact, the only Ionan inhabitants (mostly scientist and corporate workers) lived in stations that orbited high above the moon. Excavators would only descend to the surface to mine for raw metals, or for some forms of scientific experimentation. Io is also used to dispose of waste from the rest of the Galilean Moons, earning it the nickname "Jovian Junkyard".
Europa was a small moon made almost entirely of solid ice, with a saltwater ocean under the surface. Earth space programs famously wanted to explore this ocean in the hopes that they might find extraterrestrial life on its surface. Upon finally arriving on Europa in 2226 AD, the humans found only primitive microorganisms. However, "European life forms" has been actively used in pharmaceuticals and genetic engineering. All settlements on Europa are underwater, protected by an ice sheet from Jupiter's radiation. Aquatic wildlife and seaweed from Earth were brought to Europa which led to the food self-sufficiency of the colony.
The largest settlements: New Minos (capital of Europe), Kitezh, Pulgasari
