His father had left them when he was young and his mother did her best to provide for her son while holding positions as a bakery assistant during the day and a maid at night. Although she worked herself to the point of exhaustion, she made time to pass her skills onto her son. He did his best to help his mother whenever he could, taking odd jobs to scrape up additional funds. He had a limited education and struggled to connect with his classmates, seeming to be a loner to his teachers. He thought that the education was unnecessary and distanced himself from his classmates and teachers whose financial and familial situations were better than his. Unfortunately, his efforts to provide financial help were not enough to alleviate his mother's burden of overworking and she fell gravely ill. It wouldn't be long before the illness took her life and a teenage Edgar was left on his own.

The teen longed for change and with what little funds he had, he travelled to the Sinnoh region in the hopes of making a better life for himself and numbing the pain of losing his mother. He settled in Snowpoint city, finding comfort in its wintery chill. The cold spread through his heart, causing him to lash out at those who tried to get close to him in an effort to avoid the pain of losing a loved one yet again. He found steady work from a no-nonsense patissiere who showed compassion to the borderline homeless, bratty boy by allowing him to stay at her home in exchange for assisting in her bakery. Although Edgar didn't trust the woman, he had no prospects for being employed anywhere else and begrudgingly accepted her offer.
Edgar's baking skills improved greatly under the patissiere's tutelage, being allowed to add his own creations to the bakery's menu by the time he reached adulthood. The patissiere was glad to see his progress, often joking that Edgar might one day open a bakery and run her out of business. After finishing a day of work, Edgar noticed a flyer that had been left on the counter of the bakery. It advertised a patissier position for a private hotel - some place called the "Chai Château". Intrigued by the flyer, Edgar proposed to the patissiere who had taken care of him that he would work at this hotel and become her world-famous rival. He left for the position the next day to follow the cryptic description of the château's location, simply indicating the forest in which it was located. He wandered through the forest aimlessly until his legs grew weary and the awareness of his lack of resources gnawed at his mind. Finding a spot to rest once night fell, the man shivered and felt as though he were on the edge of death as he fell asleep. Upon waking, he found himself lying on a plush bed in a warm room within the château.
