Born and immediately abandoned in the slums of Ecruteak City, an unnamed baby cried out to no one. This was the beginning of the life of the man who would come to be known as "Ikumi". Unlike many of the other abandoned babies, he was fortunate enough to have pity taken upon him by a group of older children that had also been abandoned and were now living on the streets.
      He grew quickly, enlisted to help out with the children's thievery once he was able to walk on his own. Acquiring a large frame for his age, the other kids began to call him "Inoshishi" due to his size and the brutish strength he developed through the course of brawling with other children and adults. Towering over other children his age and having the muscle to back up his aggressive personality were fitting of the wild boar association that had become his name.
      Outgrowing the role of a stealthy thief, his size and strength were eventually noticed by a small group of thugs. They offered the boy a stable place to live and food in exchange for his help as an enforcer. The thugs were making a living off of threatening residents out of their money. If they didn't pay, they wouldn't get the gang's "protection" from the small yakuza family that was making a name for itself in Olivine City. "Inoshishi" accompanied the gang members as intimidation. The locals were too afraid of his size and rumored strength to act against the gang. Working with the gang, "Inoshishi" was taught the basics of how to wield a katana. His skills with the weapon were sloppy, simply using his brute strength to cleave through whatever target he was presented with.
      As the years passed, "Inoshishi" began to notice how he was treated differently compared to other members of the gang. His food was worse, he slept on the floor while the others at least had a straw mat, and he was frequently disrespected by the older members of the gang. It was unfair to the boy and he wanted to act out against them, an opportunity presenting itself much sooner than he expected.
      The yakuza family from Olivine City was aiming to expand their influence into Ecruteak, but the gang was proving to be troublesome. While not well organized, the gang had many physically powerful members that had taken down several yakuza members that had tried to scout out the city and got caught. Finding one of these yakuza members that was trying to infiltrate the city, "Inoshishi" betrayed the gang and let him live on the condition he was taken to the yakuza family.
      Meeting with the family, he agreed to join them and assist in the overthrow of the gang. In exchange, he got better food, a proper bed, and respect from the people he was working with. Not knowing about the politics between the yakuza families and that the one he joined was opposing the influential Yamaguchi family by spreading their influence into Ecruteak, "Inoshishi" quickly climbed the rungs of the group. He was permitted to get glasses, the oyabun noticing that the man had a hard time distinguishing faces and fine details on objects. He was grateful to the family for this, but his loyalty to them was only to a limited extent. The group was convenient for taking care of his needs but he didn't feel as the he was obligated to them for anything.
      He became lazy about doing his work, the teen choosing to spend more time doing things in his own interest rather than the things the family told him to. His petulant attitude drew the ire of the oyabun he served, being summoned to their quarters before long. The oyabun gave him a cruel proposition intended to beat the boy into submission. If he could best the oyabun's current bodyguard, he would be allowed to replace him and have access to whatever his heart desired. Confident in his strength, "Inoshishi" agreed and fought for the position. However, his teenage frame was no much for the fully grown man and he lost, being brutally beaten for his insolence. He lost consciousness, unaware of the assault that was being mounted against his oyabun by the Yamaguchi family's daughter.
      When he regained consciousness, "Inoshishi" was greeted with the blurry sight of a short girl and two massive men that seemed to be her guards. A small smile was on her lips, but there was little emotion behind her stare towards the oyabun that was seated behind him. Hearing a sudden shout from the oyabun commanding that he kill the girl, "Inoshishi" sized her up with a quick glance, determining that she would be easy enough to finish off. Using what strength he could muster after the beating, he lunged at the small girl, mentally preparing for combat with her intimidating guards. But before he could fully process what was happening, the world turned upside down and the wind was knocked out of his lungs. Bewildered, he saw the small girl had pinned him down, a murderous glimmer in her pitch-black eyes.
      Instead of the finishing blow that he expected, the girl left him and made sure he saw the oyabun's final moments as a poisonous ring was pierced into his throat. The girl then approached "Inoshishi," making him an offer he couldn't refuse. He didn't feel that loyal to the family he was a part of anyway and agreed to become the small girl's bodyguard. Though he was unsure why she wanted him to serve in that position, considering the ease with which she neutralized him earlier.

The two were nearly inseparable from that day forward and Ikumi felt a life debt towards the small girl accompanied by an increasing sense of loyalty as he got to know everything about her. That admiration festered in his heart, eventually developing into a crush that caused him to lash out at those who tried to get close to her. When he finally mustered up the courage to confess his feelings, Shiakki quickly shot him down, making it clear that she did not share the feeling and that he was only a pet in her eyes. Agreeing to this designation to stay by her side, Ikumi buried his feelings and accompanied the vicious girl as she lead the public execution of her parents to become the next oyabun.

The Yamaguchi family's influence had spread across a vast swath of the Johto region and had even begun to establish connections in other regions through their diverse membership. It was obvious that Shiakki would soon be targeted and Ikumi was on edge as they traveled to Ecruteak City to meet with Shiakki's apprentice.

The meeting seemed to go smoothly, and it was established that Shiakki's apprentice would take over as the next oyabun, to be announced by high-ranking members of the family the next day. She boldly decided to leave through the building's front entrance, well aware that it was surrounded and that the enforcers were going to kill her if they couldn't capture her. Ikumi loyally followed Shiakki as they fled into the woods surrounding Ecruteak City. It seemed like she had some sort of plan and Ikumi put his faith into it unquestioningly, loyally to his master to the end.
      The sound of two gunshots and a sharp pain in his abdomen were the last things Ikumi remembered before stumbling into a clearing with Shiakki and seeing the chateau.
