Description
So these are my entries for the Unicorn themed contest in the club. Being a person of mixed cultures, I couldn't decide on what kind of Unicorn to draw...so I did one from both cultures that my family relates to. And heck, I even came up with a back Story for them!Meet Lin and Ren. These two are brothers (Adopted). When they were young, they were stolen from their homes and families by a band of exotic traders to be sold for bad, evil, evil purposes. They were found caged and starving in the trader's caravan by an elderly nanny goat who mistook them for little goat kids. She freed them and took them to her cottage where she raised the two as her sons. Imagine her surprise when they grew into legendary beasts. ^_^
Lin is a Qilin, a representation of a beast of legend in asian culture that has been referred to as a Chinese Unicorn by westerners. It is also prominent in Japan and Korea as well, known as a Kirin in Japan, and Gilin in Korea.
Lin is 16 and is strong and protective of his family, and tends to babysit his brother Ren alot. Since he is older, he remembers more about the cruelty of the exotic traders who had taken both he and his brother.
Traditionally, a Qilin is a beast composed of the head of a dragon or tiger, mane of a lion, the hooves of an ox or horse, the tail of a lion or ox, scales of a fish, and it can have either 1 or 2 horns/antlers. It depends on the area of the Orient that the parts of the Qilin are derived from.
Qilins are known to be gentle creatures, but they are quick to punish the wicked who threaten the pure. It is said that wherever they walk, they never trample the grass and can walk on water.
Lin's name in Chinese is basically a Surname that means "forest" or "woods". Seemed fitting since a Qilin is so closely tied to nature, as well as prosperity and power.
I also gave him a Chinese queue (The braided ponytail) to further emphasize his oriental origins.
Ren is 14 and is based on the classic Renaissance unicorn design, whereas he has cloven hooves, Lion's tail, and the single horn. The only thing missing is the goat's beard, but since he is so young, I felt adding one would make him look too old. Ren's personality also reflects that of a classic unicorn, he is quiet, timid, shy, and easily startled and is quick to flee for the protection of Lin. He tends to wander with his heads in the clouds, and enjoys the tranquility of nature.
Ren's name is basically taken from the word Renaissance, since his design is based on the time period.
Both of them have ivory horns, so they are not made of any special magical materials like Alicorn (Yes, Alicorn is actually defined as the substance a traditional unicorn's horn is made of). I like to make such features on animals something more sensible. And Yes, I like to make characters based on actual hoofed animals to have hooves. I like to take the anatomical route when designing these characters. Keeps things interesting and unique to my own style. And like the beasts they are based on, they have proper snouts/muzzles to maintain a close reselblance to the creatures they are based on. The short "hedgehog-styled" face is way overused, and just does not fit on everything, y'know? ^_^
And for the Love of Art, COMMENT PLEASE.

I didn't realise there was a chinese unicorn in legends, great work on these two ^^
I really should try to enter these contests, maybe then I'll have the drive to get off my lazy butt and draw something.

Well, the Qilin isn't considered a "Unicorn" in asia. That's just the reference used by western cultures.
Funny thing, Qilins are more referenced to Giraffes than anything else.
Yeah, I normally don't enter these contests. Too biased most of the time. But this kinda inspired me to try something new. ^_^
