Description
For a while now, I've been working on my own version of an "Asian" race in the MLP: FIM. I would like to see the show expand on other regions, sort of how they hinted at with Saddle Arabia and all. I already designed my Baby Asian dragon Lián: MLP:FIM Baby Asian Dragon More LianI had, long ago, decided to work on a Qilin race, but trying to develop an original look and to keep true to the origins of these creatures of Asian mythology was a bit of a challenge. Not to mention trying to come up with a name for their "Homeland".
Now, before people start commenting with "Those are Great Ponies!" let's get something straight here. I am a person of Asian descent, I take great pride in my heritage and roots, so I appreciate it if people Read my descriptions thoroughly, are respectful of my standing, and don't try to trample me with trollish flames, spam, or anything that may insult me culturally.
Qilin are not "Ponies". A Qilin is a beast composed of the head of a dragon or tiger, mane of a lion, the hooves of an ox or horse, the tail of a lion or ox, scales of a fish, and it can have either 1 or 2 horns/antlers. It depends on the area of the Orient that the parts of the Qilin are derived from. In Asia, Qilin are considered to be more closely related to Dragons. With how they are constructed, westerners should more correctly classify them as Chimeras, because by definition, a Chimera is "mythical or fictional animal with parts taken from various animals".
I've seen others make their own versions of Qilin, some are very impressive, others could use more research into Asian Lore. Most stuck to the Japanese Kirin, probably because of the popularity and influence of Anime. Its basically the same creature, just spelled/written differently from another Asian region. I stuck with the original Chinese/Tibetan name of Qilin for the species. I even thought of going for the Korean name of Gilin, but I decided against it because in the spoken Korean language, the "G" is pronounced like a "K", and that would only confuse people.
The Region that my Qilin hail from is called Neigh-Beyul. Its a play off of a real place in Nepal called Nghe-Beyul Khimpalung, one of the Seven designated Bhuddist Shangri-Las. The name "Nghe" means "Sacred Place" and "Beyul" is a hidden valley. I replaced Nghe with Neigh because it looks similar, and the Sherpa annunciation is close too. "Neigh" just gives it reference to the MLP world.
Neigh-Beyul is a land of Balance and Harmony. It is a kingdom that is ruled over by an Emperor and Empress (These are them), and it is a key region to ensure that all elements of nature remain equal and stable.
Here are the rulers of Neigh-Beyul. The Empress, Lady Yin and the Emperor Lord Yang. Yes, it is a play off the Yin-Yang, and they are designed to reflect the aspects of the two symbols. Both are designed with aspects of all 4 of the other Qilin races (Earth Qilin, Wind Qilin, Fire Qilin and Metal Qilin. Why is there no "Water Qilin"? Because Water is the domain of the Dragons.) and are the avatars of Elemental Balance in Neigh-Beyul. They are designed with opposing details and color schemes (The color scheme is similar to how I colored my Princes of Space and Time, which was unintentional). They bear antlers which strengthens their power and rule, and is a sign of a crown on their heads (The antlers are designed like Chital antlers, a deer native to southern Asia). Both rule as equals, with neither overpowering the other. Should the balance of power shift at all, the lands and dwellers of Neigh-Beyul would fall into elemental chaos.
Lady Yin is a pure representation of all that is Yin; Female, Negative, Night, Moon, Passive, Intuitive, Cold, Soft.
She is keeper of all things negative and dark. Some fear her as the bringer of darkness, who can summon nightmares and monsters to punish the wicked. Her personality is kind, yet manipulative. She takes pleasure in her dark enchantments and ability to sway others with her silver tongue.
Lord Yang is a pure representation of all that is Yang; Male, Positive, Day, Sun, Active, Logical, Hot, Hard.
He is the keeper of all things positive and light. He is seen and a benevolent bringer of justice, who blesses the pure-hearted, and brings warmth to the lands. His personality is stern and unmoving. He is very proud of his ways and traditions, and is not hesitant to assert his position with a show of strength.
Those they rule over:
Earth Qilin:
Wind Qilin:
Fire Qilin:
Metal Qilin:

The two colors together really don't mean anything. However, in Buddhism, when all the colors of Buddha come together, it creates the Rainbow Body, and combines the understanding of the principles represented by each of the colors. For followers of Buddhism, by applying that wisdom to life, and being free from desire is how one can achieve enlightenment, and possibly Nirvana.

In Buddhism, the color Green denotes youth, vigor, Karma, harmony, and balance.

The principle colors involved in Buddhism are Blue, Black, White, Red, Green, and Yellow, and each -- except for Black -- are aligned to a specific Buddha.
Blue represents tranquility, ascension, the infitine, purity, and healing.

This is absolutely amazing and I think they should feature the Qilin in a special Lunar/Chinese New Year episode. I am of Asian descent as well (mostly Thai and Vietnamese), and I fully appreciate this depiction of our mythology. In Thailand, we have our version of the Qilin/Kirin, it's called the Singha, and it's basically a guardian lion. It would be really cool if in the "Asia" of Equestria, there's an empire for each of the major mythologies and the different races are creatures within that mythology.

I am also thinking of making a kirin/Qilin OC from another land based of Asia XD I love the concept of balance, light and dark. I may not have any Asian blood in me but i highly respect and admire their culture. I really admire all the thought you put into this species! I haven't gotten far in my OC sadly i am still trying to think of a good name i got some basics of design though :3 i really love seeing kirin/Qilin OC's.

Thank you! If you would like to use my Qilin bases, you are welcome to try using their outlines to design your character. You don't have to use all my elements to create your own design.
I'd be happy to help you with a name! Are you looking for any specific kind of name? Did you want it to be related to a specific region of the Far East?
(That's what I am calling it since I don't like how "Haysia" sounds. That's the popular "Asia" term most bronies use, and it just sounds tacky to me. )

You are welcome well i got the outline done but i am not 100% sure on colours. thank you! i guess i did use yours for inspiration x3.
Right now my guess for a name is koi zhu ( bamboo in chinese) and i was thinking the name of her clan be peony ( flower of love) long (dragon). Since i was it to be accurate i and using feng shui symbolism to help me design her. I don't have her family fully thought out though what her clan does what they are known for etc, but i know species wise they have strong magic and usually elemental depending on the clan. There are two kinds of kirins/Qilin's yang and yin ( you obviously know that that means). I do have trouble naming places and the country so i would liek help please..i was thinking of having is allot like Asia, so there is the country Asia but each region is it's own ( Korea, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese etc). ( i agree it sounds tacky)
( this is a copy paste from my art so sorry if i repeat myself)
since my furonsa is a Asian chimera ( eastern dragon, tengu and kistune) i decided to make her a Kirin. So then i ended up simplifying her so much i made her into her own Pony. Name is the hardest for me i ended up using feng shui as inspiration and used koi then used zhu ( chinese for bamboo because koi bamboo sounds bad). She was going to named lucky lantern. but I am worried becausei loved luna's redemption so i wanted to make them a redeemed villian from the country they came from. Is that too god-like mary sue? Personality is meant to be like mine allot and be a mixture of pinkie pie, fluttersh and Luna ( season 2). Her cutie mark is meant to represent the butterfly effect, everywhere she goes and everypony she meets she leaves and impression, a change, something small, a helping hand etc ( since i want to become an art therapist and help people, leaving a good mark in their life). It is a butter fly with one wing like a red/black and white koi fish and the other black and gold ( feng shui symbolism) with pink sparkles behind it,and 3 bamboo stalks infront of it ( once again a feng shui symbolism). Colour scheme i am still figuring out but i was thinking pastels pink and purples with some black. ( since my sense of style is pink punk/ gothic sweet lolita ). As for backstory it has a sad story in it ( everyone is their life has hardships) she moved from her country to have a new start in life and share her love of her culture with the ponies of Equestria. In her country there are 2 types of kirin yin (represents , warmth, positivist, masculinity, sun) and yang ( dark, negativity, cold, night, femininity). Of course they don't get along the best but hey know it is balance not good and evil ( kinda liek luna and celestia). She is one of the many grand children of the emperor and child of one of the clans. But her brother is the next in line and so she thinks she isn't needed to help her citizens since it is mostly peaceful there so she left to help others and learn about Equestria.

Regarding the name, I would almost encourage abandoning the whole Cutie Mark connection since that generally would cause a lot of name blocks and issues with relevance. I myself did not apply cutie marks to my Qilin to allow for more freedom for names, and personalities and it also dis-associated them from being "ponies" in general. If you wish to keep to the Cutie Mark connection, perhaps a revised cutie mark?
On a side note, lucky bamboo is actually not part of the practice of Feng Shui. It is actually more of a fad that was loosely associated with creating an zen environment through indoor gardening practices. Feng Shui encourages a unity of the 5 elements, and generally, most traditional practitioners of Feng Shui will have a fully constructed garden with running water streams, fountains, or small ponds.
Keep in mind as well, Yin and Yang is not about good and evil. It is a symbol of balance of all things. Good and Evil are completely different aspects that are associated to the human condition and nature, or in this case, the nature of the "enemy" who threatens to disrupt the balance.
You really seem to like the Peony connection. Peonies are known as the flower of riches, honor, romance, prosperity, good fortune and are regarded as an omen of a happy marriage. that is a good symbol for a clan.
Perhaps make the Cutie Mark more of a Butterfly with a Peony blossom? That would give your character a connection to the clan and to her own Butterfly Effect personality.
For the name...Perhaps Shòumìng? It means "life and longevity" which is what the butterfly symbolizes.
That's just some basic points and my insight. I think you have done a lot of research and work to create your character, and I think you can develop a great clan in the Far East. If you would like more input or help, feel free to chat me up! ^_^

I guess i just really like cutie marks >3<
dang it the Internet lied to me .-. DAMN U INTERNET!!!
i love the name shouming <3 and i was thinking of having the peonie on the cutie mark but i guess her previous name was going to be lucky lantern ( i suck at names) so i used bamboo to use for the lucky aspect, also i always have loved bamboo so i got some bias i want to use bamboo in something? and thank you!!! I her clan even know a yang qilin but there is still love in the night ( yes i love princess luna ) And also i am having an obsession or koi right now, the colours, the symbolism also the word koi is so cute.
I am almost finishing colouring in so maybe i can show you on skype so i can ask for your opinions onc olours....since i think it is an eye sore "~"

Korean Gilins are more ox-like in their designs, while Japanese Kirins are more deer-like, and Chinese Qilins are more lion-like. All have dragon-ish details along with the fish scales, horns/antlers, and such.
The differences are pretty minor, but noticeable to those who have an eye for detail.
