Description
For a while now, I've been working on my own version of an "Asian" race in the MLP: FIM. I would like to see the show expand on other regions, sort of how they hinted at with Saddle Arabia and all. I already designed my Baby Asian dragon Lián: MLP:FIM Baby Asian Dragon More LianI had, long ago, decided to work on a Qilin race, but trying to develop an original look and to keep true to the origins of these creatures of Asian mythology was a bit of a challenge. Not to mention trying to come up with a name for their "Homeland".
Now, before people start commenting with "Those are Great Ponies!" let's get something straight here. I am a person of Asian descent, I take great pride in my heritage and roots, so I appreciate it if people Read my descriptions thoroughly, are respectful of my standing, and don't try to trample me with trollish flames, spam, or anything that may insult me culturally.
Qilin are not "Ponies". A Qilin is a beast composed of the head of a dragon or tiger, mane of a lion, the hooves of an ox or horse, the tail of a lion or ox, scales of a fish, and it can have either 1 or 2 horns/antlers. It depends on the area of the Orient that the parts of the Qilin are derived from. In Asia, Qilin are considered to be more closely related to Dragons. With how they are constructed, westerners should more correctly classify them as Chimeras, because by definition, a Chimera is "mythical or fictional animal with parts taken from various animals".
I've seen others make their own versions of Qilin, some are very impressive, others could use more research into Asian Lore. Most stuck to the Japanese Kirin, probably because of the popularity and influence of Anime. Its basically the same creature, just spelled/written differently from another Asian region. I stuck with the original Chinese/Tibetan name of Qilin for the species. I even thought of going for the Korean name of Gilin, but I decided against it because in the spoken Korean language, the "G" is pronounced like a "K", and that would only confuse people.
The Region that my Qilin hail from is called Neigh-Beyul. Its a play off of a real place in Nepal called Nghe-Beyul Khimpalung, one of the Seven designated Bhuddist Shangri-Las. The name "Nghe" means "Sacred Place" and "Beyul" is a hidden valley. I replaced Nghe with Neigh because it looks similar, and the Sherpa annunciation is close too. "Neigh" just gives it reference to the MLP world.
Neigh-Beyul is a land of Balance and Harmony. It is a kingdom that is ruled over by an Emperor and Empress (These are them), and it is a key region to ensure that all elements of nature remain equal and stable.
Here are the rulers of Neigh-Beyul. The Empress, Lady Yin and the Emperor Lord Yang. Yes, it is a play off the Yin-Yang, and they are designed to reflect the aspects of the two symbols. Both are designed with aspects of all 4 of the other Qilin races (Earth Qilin, Wind Qilin, Fire Qilin and Metal Qilin. Why is there no "Water Qilin"? Because Water is the domain of the Dragons.) and are the avatars of Elemental Balance in Neigh-Beyul. They are designed with opposing details and color schemes (The color scheme is similar to how I colored my Princes of Space and Time, which was unintentional). They bear antlers which strengthens their power and rule, and is a sign of a crown on their heads (The antlers are designed like Chital antlers, a deer native to southern Asia). Both rule as equals, with neither overpowering the other. Should the balance of power shift at all, the lands and dwellers of Neigh-Beyul would fall into elemental chaos.
Lady Yin is a pure representation of all that is Yin; Female, Negative, Night, Moon, Passive, Intuitive, Cold, Soft.
She is keeper of all things negative and dark. Some fear her as the bringer of darkness, who can summon nightmares and monsters to punish the wicked. Her personality is kind, yet manipulative. She takes pleasure in her dark enchantments and ability to sway others with her silver tongue.
Lord Yang is a pure representation of all that is Yang; Male, Positive, Day, Sun, Active, Logical, Hot, Hard.
He is the keeper of all things positive and light. He is seen and a benevolent bringer of justice, who blesses the pure-hearted, and brings warmth to the lands. His personality is stern and unmoving. He is very proud of his ways and traditions, and is not hesitant to assert his position with a show of strength.
Those they rule over:
Earth Qilin:
Wind Qilin:
Fire Qilin:
Metal Qilin:

Vision: Very clear, beautiful
Originality: I would say 4 stars because you have added horns which looks like cherry blossom ponies
Technique: LOVE IT
Impact: A very strong impact for me because I wanna learn how 2 draw ponies and still failing at it.
On the originality though I feel like you took other ponies and put them together. :/ I realize that this also came from Japanese culture so yeah.
Personally I like the orange one better because I love the hair style. On the other hand on the gray one I love the flowers and black hair.
Hope you enjoyed :3

Very nice job indeed. I've never seen better Mlp Kirin drawn by anyone. If I had to guess I'd say you used a vector software to draw them and exported to a PNG, which, in my opinion, is the only way ponies should be drawn.
Kirin is not that .much of a popular concept in the Mlp fandom so I say this is VERY original. Well, you're not the first but certainly the best. Kudos to you for even thinking up an Asian part of equestria to explain where these ponies came from.
Your art leaves little to dislike, and is all around amazing. Great job.

I love your interpretation of the Qilin as well!
I used the Japanese term that uses K in romanji, but I did make the point to research the original lore from China. ( honestly it doesn't feel the same to me otherwise >w>') Still I made acceptions in the design for fear it wouldn't look right - however.
You did a very lovely interpretation- you went into the bodies more- which I shied away from.
Seeing it now, I can see that adapting the figures to resemble the more'goat/deer-like figure DOESN'T take away from the authentic feel of the concept. You went all out and it looks great!
(( sorry I missed the submission box XD out my comment in the wrong place!))

these creatures are so cool looking and pretty I never knew like things like this existed. I like knowing about creatures like this and I was wondering how much would it cost for me to have a oc in your world you created if that is ok with you. if not that is ok. I would like to learn more about these amazing creatures if you are willing to do so. thanks for sharing these amazing creatures.

Thank you for your comment and interest in my Qilin design. ^_^
I'd have to say, they don't really exist in my own personal "world" you could say. I designed them to fit into the MLP universe itself, just as its own region called the Far East.
If you are interested in designing a qilin character of your own, I do have base templates for the four common qilin races that you can use for no cost here! MLP FIM Qilin of Neigh-Beyul Base Templates UPDATE
I only ask that you credit me and link to my resources in your submission. ^_^
If you are looking for something similar to my Imperial Qilin characters, like the Emperor Lord Yang and Empress Lady Yin, their designs are unique to my style and creation, and I only permit character creation and designs via commission. I know that may seem strict, but its the best way to preserve these royal figures in my lore. If you are interested in an imperial design, we can talk about commissioning and you can review my commission options and prices that are displayed on my profile page.

The imperial Qilin encompass all the represented elements of the common qilin. If you take a look at the common ones and read their descriptions, the different kinds of qilin (like the different kinds of ponies) all represent an element of feng shui. Earth, Wind, Fire, and Metal, are their types, and Water belongs to the dragons. Imperial Qilin encompass all 4 of the element types and act as the pillars of balance for their dynasty. You can see by their design that they have features from each of the Earth, Wind, Fire and Metal types.

Well, Lord Yang, and Lady Yin encompass all of the 4-Qilin types. Having a regular Qilin with mixed attributes would be a rare occurrence, but not impossible. The only other character I've developed that's a "mixed" breed is my Mao Xiu:

Ok I love the idea if Chinese residents being Qilin instead of ponies. My favorite pony oc is a hybrid between a Chinese dragon and a crystal bat pony, so she could probably fit in there somewhere

and I also like you used warm and cool colors for these two because they're the complete opposite.
But anyways
Keep up the good work!

I'm on an iPhone so I can't but all you need to do is type Equestria map on google. It shows locations from the movie and Kirin Grove, I heard a rumor from an inside source that...one episode in Season 8 will be like Over a barrel, with Dragons against Kirins.

Nice theory of Chinese ponies, i think in the pony comics wild cats (lions, tigers etc) are the equivalent to latin americans in Equestria and domestic cats are the equivalent of egyptians.

I like to think their manes represents more than just the colors of the Yin-Yang.
I see Lady Yin's black hair as a sign of young Asian female beauty. And I see Lord Yang's white hair more associate with (elderly) wisdom, like the Chinese/Asian sages.

No, I do not have a base for these two character designs.
I do have bases you can use to design other members of my 4 Qilin races, but these two are off limits.
You can find my bases for the 4-Qilin races here: MLP FIM Qilin of Neigh-Beyul Base Templates UPDATE
I do not allow bases to be made, or tracing of these characters. I want these two to remain unique as my creations.
