Description
First Submission for May!
So, I've mentioned in previous submissions that the Qilin were driven from the untamed wilds and grassland by their rivals and enemies the Haetae. Some were wondering what they were and what they would look like.
The Haetae (pronounced "Ha-eh-teh") is the Korean name for the creature. It is also known as the; Kaichi (Japanese), or Xiezhi (Chinese). They are a mythical creature that is often compared to the Qilin, but is more representative of justice and law. It is described to be more feral and imposing. I originally chose the Japanese name of Sin-You, but after some information was recently updated it seems the term Sin-You has come under scrutiny, so I opted to update the species name to Haetae.
Even though I used the Korean name for the creature, the design more follows the Chinese and Japanese descriptions of the beasts. It is described as a large quadruped with a lion and Caprinae (Goat or Sheep) features, a shaggy mane, and is depicted with hooves or feline paws. In has a single horn in the center of its head, like a western unicorn. The eyes are said to be very intense and imposing, figuratively burning into whomever it gazes at in a predatory fashion. In designing the Haetae, I took the Caprinae into the hind end for more power for charging and running, while the Lion aspects are in the front end. The tails are designed to resemble old Asian artwork of Haetae. They were short and bushy looking, and somewhat curly. And I think I am happy with the color schemes now.
Gave the male a red mane similar to the manticore. Red is a "power" color and intimidating, so I thought it was a good choice, but I'm not too sure if its a keeper.
Gave the Female more of a brown mane, keeping to a natural earth tone so she can blend in to her surroundings like a feline. With the option of either Goat or Sheep, I went with the sheep wool, but goat coloring which allowed for more natural coloring to blend in with the environment. Females are built for endurance and can run long distances.
It is believed that Haetae have the power to know if a person is lying or know if they are guilty with a glance. It sometimes depicted at court beside the ruler or judge: if a person told a falsehood in its presence, it would leap forward and impale the perjurer though the heart with its horn. In other instances, the judge would put convicted murderers before the Haetae, who would slay them in the same fashion if they were truly the perpetrator, but leave the innocent unharmed.
I have both a Male and Female design here.
The male is much hairier, with a lion-like features. Their bodies are thicker and more muscular, built for fighting. Males have more Lion-like heads. For this male, I've named him Ganzurkh (means Steel Heart)
The female has a smaller, more elegant mane, and her body is more lean. You can see she in more well kept than the male. She is built for endurance. Females have more Lynx-like heads. For this female, I've named her Erdene (Means Jewel)
In Haetae society, they are very aggressive and primal. They live in tribal prides, ruled by a chief Male (Khan) and Female (Khatun). Though they are predatory creatures, they do not prey upon other intelligent beasts of the world. I am convinced that there are other basic prey animals in this world of Quadrapeds that do not speak or have sentient self awareness. Critters considered "pets" would be prey to these creatures. I imagine Fluttershy would not like them...at all. If you have enough sense to know right from wrong, you are subject to judgement in their lands. They see themselves as the keepers of Justice, and are very quick to judge in the wilds. They are very harsh and forward when they speak, and are very intimidating. They are very prideful creatures and territorial, believing that the grasslands of the East belong only to their kind to rule over.
This sketch will be updated later with a vectored version. Right now, I'm busy getting things made for an upcoming crafts fair so I can try to earn some extra cash this month. Damn apartment rent was raised again...
---------------------------------Profiles---------------------------------
Ganzurkh Khan
Chieftain of his Haetae tribe. He is indomitable, strict, and very powerful. His roar demands respect and obedience.
He is short tempered, so do not waste his time with petty concerns or idle banter. He wants to get straight to the point and deal with any important matter imminently. He stands as judge over those on trial in his territory, he is wise, but can be quick to judge in his desire to serve justice.
His main concerns are to defend his tribe's territory, and secure enough prey for his people to hunt.
Erdene Khatun
Mate to the Khan, she oversees the well being of the tribe, and leads hunting parties. She is also a young mother to her first cub (will be featured later), the Khan's son Batu. She is very protective of her child and tribe, and she is more calculating and observant of finer details than her mate. She tends to be the voice of reason to her mate when he starts to lose his temper. However, she too will become irate to idle banter and stalling.
And the Cub version (Batu!):

Now without any further delay onto the review.
Vision: Well this is just bubbling with vision and potential. There is a lot that can be taken from this and I really liked the descriptive description. These are great creations and the only thing that could really improve the vision is a good background. 4.5 stars
Originality: From what I perceived these are original characters and open us up a door into the heart and mind of their creator. The artist even gives us a male and female version of this new race. 4.5 stars
Technique: This is a well designed digital work and is only in need of a little more detail in the fur and manes as well as their tails. 3.5 stars hooves down.
Impact: Again it is always great to see original work and this is no exception. In fact the only thing that would increase the impact , other then the added details mentioned above, is a good background. 3.5 stars
Overall this is a great work and I can't wait to see what else this artist has to offer.

I think Sinyu is fine, as long as you don't emphasize the "Sin" part with a -.

That is a good question about Fluttershy's reaction to predators. My guess is if they are sentient (Dragons, Haetae, etc) then yeah she probably wouldn't like them very much, but if they're just animals then she would have no problem (food chain). Though to be fair the level of sentience in cartoon animals is pretty blurry in the show, just look at Angel bunny and Owlicious.
Anyway I still hold my opinion of this idea from the last time you uploaded it, and it's really cool and imaginative, keep up the great work.

i have something kinda similar.
A pony head/neck, a cat's upper body, and pony hindsaddle/lower body. they have thin ancient unicorn tails (thin all around) and can have pegasus wings, a unicorn horn, or not s[ecial features (earth pony) they can have a set of horns or antlers. and they have manes. they also have chets floofs.
this reminds me of my ov's. of course yours are kinda different. i like them

Sounds similar to a Qilin. Qilin and Sin-You are mythical creatures from Asia and they are basically a type of Chimera with their initial makeups.
You can read more about it in my other Qilin submissions if you would like o learn more.

Hmm... perhaps the whole body of the female could be one color, to make her camoflauge better?
Also, fantastic work here, as usual! I love the tidbits of culture and history and the design itself.

Thanks! I was thinking about it, but then I thought people wouldn't see her rump as being Ovine but more Bovine.

Ah... hmm... but can't there be a brown-ish sheep?
I mean, in real life sheep walk around and get dirty, making their coats less white... perhaps just make her a wee bit more yellow-ish?

Very well designed, and I'm thinking they could allow the same level of possibilities as the Griffins, combine any bird species with any large cat species for variances, only in this case any ovines with any cats (e.g. Merino sheep hind quarters with a Cheetah front or Jaguar, etc).
As a culture they sound very intense, I'd imagine they would butt heads with the Yaks a lot if they ever crossed paths XD

Well, I dunno about the various inter-species variants. The Sin-You are actually very specific with their makeups being very Lion-like, and the sheep portion would be a more like an Asian Wild Sheep, like the Argali.
Cheetahs and Jaguars are not native to Asia, and this region is targeted specifically to the Far East. Lions are native to Asia.
If they did butt heads with the Yaks, I think the Yaks might run at first, until they regrouped and outnumbered the Sin-You. Territory disputes would probably just declare war on the spot. O_o

Ah okay, I just thought it was a very creative idea the show had that Griffins aren't restricted to being half eagle and half lion, and thought it could also apply to the Sin-You and other hybrid creatures.

I've always wanted to know what these Sin-you of yours were like. I was familiar with some of the lore behind them, and I like how you've integrated these various aspects of the lore together.

Thank you! It did take a while to get the aspects to look just how I wanted them to, but I think I balanced it out quite well.

Hmm...it seems one of my sources was wrong...what it called a Kirin was really this thing. (I drew one once: (top right) violetwhirlwind.deviantart.com… (beware...old drawing is old)) What with the justice thing and all.
My other source just says it's an alternate name for the eastern unicorn.

I am not sure what your sources are, but these creatures versus qilin are more associated with Justice.
Xiezhi (Sin-You) are much more aggressive creatures. Because they are able to detect lies and identify the guilty, they were often the symbols of justice in Asia. Even in South Korea, the Haetae is the official symbol for their capital, Seoul.
Qilin (Kirin) are said to be of a more gentle nature, and are known for never trampling the grass and walking on water. It is said that qilin will punish the wicked, but not like a Xiezhi.
Personally, I've never felt right about calling either a Qilin or a Xiezhi an "eastern unicorn". In comparison to a unicorn, these Asian mythical creatures are more based in primal nature, whereas a unicorn is more holy and mystical. In my descriptions, I more identify Qilin and Xiezhi as types of Chimera.
