It's sad that people get all outraged about stuff when they don't really take the time to study up on it. My horse got a little scratch in her stall the other day...maybe we should ban stalls. Anyways, your rodeo photos make my rodeo photos cry. They're incredible! Keep up the good work.

Hmm, I know this is a sport and people say that its not painful for the horses, but I have to agree with Freeburgfreak. I truthfully think this sport is inhumane, but thats just in my opinion. I have nothing at all against you if your for the sport ((which obviously you are)) so I apologize if this sounds like a rude comment. It's just the way Im feeling towards this photograph and you are allowing critique on this.
I have a lot to say on this picture, but I will keep it short and to the point.
I like the angle of this photo. The lighting and shot were taken at a very striking time which allows a lot of emotion into this photograph. The horse is right in the middle of the picture and there is really nothing else in this photograph that draws a lot of attention, except for the horse and rider of course. And the whole setting is very beautiful scene. It really does give you the feeling of being there at that rodeo.
And now my dislikes. Pretty much everything that has to do with seeing the horse like this I guess you can say. I dont know, I mean even if the strap doesnt bring the animal pain, the horse is definately showing signs of discomfort. And with any living creature, I just hate to see animals in distress.
Hmm, yeah sorry but I felt like I needed to add an input on this photo. But besides the whole ideal of everything, this picture is pretty remarkable.

I don't think having a strap on the you know what is natural. It musn't be to comfortable but it's not cruel.Freeburgfreak I think your stretching the truth I don't think it's that bad, If ti was so cruel wouldn't there be more people against it? And wouldn't it be illegal?People always think that cowboys treat their horses real bad but it's the exact oppisite thier horses mean the world to them. It's just nto money moeny lIke it is with money race horse owners and jump horse owners. Hell yeah rodeo is dangerous but so is just about every other equestrain event such as jumping and racing.

I agree- to extent.
BUT, the strap is not on their "you know whats". It's called a flank strap. And thats exactly where it goes. On their flank.

*cough* yeah... im sure about that. so thats why it fell over and thats why its bleeding. I wonder that could have caused that? to make it fall over? maybe the excruciating pain it would be in from the flank strap?
If a horse was bleeding in any other sort of sport shuch as dressage or polo, it would be taken off course for first aid.

saudimack In reply to freeburgfreak [2006-06-07 23:49:50 +0000 UTC]
Excruitiating pain!? LOL oh jeez. There is no pain caused from the flank strap. It is just a irritation. Obviously causing the horse to buck - instinct.
It fell down because it's young, and it's first time bucking. And it's bleeding because he prolly nicked himself. Nothing that the rodeo did to him.
Go ahead, bring up all the PETA crap. It's a bunch of radical people making up a bunch of bull.
Also, why bother commenting my picture if all you have to do is say how rodeo is cruel? What do you honestly think you're going to get back as a response? Incase you couldn't tell, rodeo is a big part of my gallery, and me.

freeburgfreak In reply to saudimack [2006-06-08 06:48:52 +0000 UTC]
oh shut up! How much of an arrogant fool can you be? Animals that participate in rodeos are damaged and destroyed. Im not saying every one of them, but a lot of them are. Sure enough there are accidents with everything! like racing, show jumping whatever. But rodeos are induced cruelty. BULLSHIT! i know what your thinking! "natrual" for what? getting away from something that is hurting them!! I don't need a genius to tell me that these animals are in pain when they are doing this sport. Would a horse or cow run into a fence for nothing? NO. they do it to get away from danger or get away from pain.
A response? well u could say "sure its cruel. id love to help these animals but im to big headed to realise." U say u like animals... get a life.
PETA? or the RSPCA?... think about it...

You're not doing anything for anyone by freaking out, except giving yourself and the rest of us animal lovers a bad name, and pissing off the photographer. Put your anger to more constructive uses, you will be taken seriously if you approach things calmly and with good grammar.

Oh, But did you ever think that the cruelty lies in the moment? What makes the animal buck? What drives them to the anger and fanatic movements?

saudimack In reply to freeburgfreak [2006-06-08 16:51:40 +0000 UTC]
Chill out. You were the one that commented on MY picture. So don't even tell me to shut up. Name calling really shows your immaturity. And also the fact you don't have much knowledge in this sport.
These animals are not in pain, and there is no cruelity involved. If there was, they would never be going on all around the US. Just think about it, how can so many people do it, and enjoy it? Hell, it's even broadcasted on TV! Obviously, it's not all bad like you think.
You obviously do not know much about any equestrian sport. How about racing? Breaking them as a yearling, racing by the time their 2. Oh yea, there is totally nothing cruel with that. Their joints aren't even fused, and they are still babies. Dressage? Do you even know what goes into the training? The equipment used? I did dressage at a very high rank barn for a year, believe me, I would know. Pleasure? The unnatural gaits, the peanut rollers. Tieing their heads up so they get too tired to hold it up in the show ring. Jumping? Jumping 5ft fences is just oh so normal right? And speaking of running into fences..what do you think show jumpers/cross country horses do when they shy, hit a pole, or refuse the jump. Run into a fence! OMGosh..you just contradicted yourself. You also mentioned polo.. hanging off the side of the horses, haulin on their mouths, falling, breaking legs cause they run into other polo horses or get hit with those sticks or balls?
So don't EVEN start dissing rodeo until you look at other equestrian events. EVERYTHING has their downfall. And rodeo has many, I agree, but not to the extent to call it cruel or inhumane.
Rodeo has they most natural MOVEMENT. Bucking, rearing, and galloping is what horses do.

freeburgfreak In reply to saudimack [2006-06-09 09:54:49 +0000 UTC]
LOL! ok i know! I know! but showjumping and cross country that is a so called "natural movement". if a horse can jump that high, why not do it? Huh? u saying that high jump in people sport is wrong too? thats not a natural movement for us now is it?
Horses buck for pleasure or if something threatens them. And im damn sure this isnt pleasure for the horses- or cows for that matter. bucking and kicking is a defensive mode, rearing is an aggressive mode. Ok what ever natural but for what means?
look drop it alright. i know im right but im damn sure convinced you dont know what the hell you are on about. I hope someone shuts down the damn rodeos.

UltimaStar In reply to freeburgfreak [2006-06-14 03:45:55 +0000 UTC]
If a horse loves to buck, why not let it buck? The flank strap causes no pain, it is just on a ticklish spot on a horse. Ever poked a horse in the flank? Yeah, its ticklish. The strap isn't near the horses jewels or anything, not to mention broncs are geldings and mares. haha. It also lets them know when it is time to buck. These horses are better cared for than most horses, and rodeo probably saved them from slaughter. Where else would a rank horse like that go? Instead of being burgers, these horses are well fed and cared for, only have to work for 8 seconds at a time..

i guess face was the wrong word, but the horses is getting kicked in the jaw (which I would guess caused it to open it's mouth). I don't blame the cowboy, i think it makes for a more interesting as an action shot in my opinion.
