Artist's Notes: Another commission done for . This is the mapinguari, a large high browsing xenarthran known for its immense size and horrendous odor. I wanted to convey the fact that this creature stinks, so I gave it long matted fur and a large gut and even took some influence from the Congalala from the Monster Hunter series, another creature known for its smell that happens to walk with a similar gait to the knuckle walking mapinguari. In order to make this look like more than just a ground sloth I looked at a variety of other xenarthrans and other armored mammals and ended up with a kind of grizzled forest giant look. I also gave it a pattern resembling a mouth on its stomach as a reference to the real world myth of the mapinguari which is described as either a surviving ground sloth or a giant ape like creature with a mouth in its abdomen.
