Artist's Notes: The Van Meter visitors are another one of favorite cryptids, not only because of their appearance but also their name. It's so cryptic and sounds like it would make a good name for some kind of experimental metal band that only releases 1 or 2 EPs before breaking up. In 1903 two of these creatures allegedly tormented the small town of Van Meter, Iowa over the course of a week until they were chased into a coal mine. The creatures were described as having bat-like wings and a horn on their forehead which could emit some kind of beam. The larger of the two was said to be about 9 feet tall. Modern depictions make it look like a pterosaur and have it crawling on all fours with its wings folded up in the way that pterosaurs are now known to do, though I don't know if either of these traits were part of the original description or merely a modern invention. The whole story of the creatures being chased into a mineshaft reminds me of Rodan or the Mahars from At Earth's Core.
