Description
Dates: 4/7/23-4/27/23 (Took 6 days)Artist's Notes: As it turns out Mastodon is not a valid taxa and is instead an informal term used for members of the genus Mammut or, alternativley, for all non-elephant proboscideans. This can be confusing because the scientific name for mammoth is Mammuthus. For those who are curious, the main way to tell the difference between a mastodon and a mammoth is through their the teeth; which are high cusped in mastodon and flat in mammoths. You can also tell from the general build of the creature; mastodon are more horizontally built with short legs, lower shoulders and a longer skull, whereas mammoths are more vertical with longer legs, higher shoulders and taller skulls. For this drawing I combined Mastodon with another outdated name for the genus, Tetracaulodon, and an outdated name for Gomphotherium, Tetrabelodon, and created a four tusked creature similar to the oliphaunts of Lord of the Rings. It's not as monstrous as I would have liked but I think it turned out ok.
