Name: Heracross

Type: Bug/Ground

Name Origin: N/A

Inspiration: Atlas beetles, dung beetles, Atlas (the Greek Titan), scarabs, catapults, Sisyphus, Hercules, Hercules beetles, triceratops beetles

Since Heracross is based on Hercules beetles, it only made sense to make a regional variant based on Atlas beetles, which share the distinction of being named after a figure in Greek mythology. Like the Atlas of myth this variant of Heracross carries a great globe upon its shoulders. Of course, I also looked at dung beetles for inspiration as they also known to carry large spheres with them. I know we have dung beetle Pokemon now with Rellor and Rabsca from Scarlet and Violet but I began designing the creatures for this series back in 2019/2020, long before those games were announced. I think that this is distinct enough from the new Pokemon, especially since it is a variant of an old one. Anyway, not only do Atlas and Hercules both have beetles named after them but in the myths Hercules once held up the world (or sky depending on the interpretation) for Atlas, so I feel like connecting the two figures through different forms of Heracross is pretty fitting. For a while I was actually trying to design this creature as a catapult that would launch its dung/dirt ball with its horn but I could never make it work so I redesigned it very quickly. I think this concept works a lot better anyway.
