Haha, so yeah, recently a friend and I were talking about how sheltered the mages are, which led me to reconsider how this very memorable conversation would've gone if the mage PC had answered honestly XDMedia: Pshop CS4

Food for thought, how does he even know what a lampost is? They're a victorian thing, and DA is definately pre-victorian tech.

Haha, true enough. Here's hoping the responses are a lil' more tailored to individual choices in DA 2 ^^

I hope so too. I am still a little wary about DA2...it has a lot to live up. If there are no "romanceable" companions in this game, I might not even play it! D< Awakenings was a big disappointment. >~<

Mages could go outside, its the (whatever Stens people are) that are kept in cages.
It would be better if the PC was a dwarf cause they really have never been outside. I still laugh everytime I see ogrhan leave orzimar

savagesparrow In reply to Chicon [2010-01-08 00:16:34 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but the tower's basically a giant cage with amenities. As far as I know from playing the origin, they don't let you go out without the templars, and it involves needing the permission of both the first enchanter and the head templar (who gets REALLY mad when duncan recruits you). Cuz when you go back to the mage's tower as a mage and you talk to the boat guy, he remarks something to the effect that he hadn't seen you since you were first brought there or whatever.
But yes, I suppose it would be more appropriate if it was a dwarven woman, but I haven't played that origin yet ;

The commoner one is fun but the Noble one is my favorite. Play as a woman and you get your own sexy dwarf man toy who will kill anyone you tell him to :-D

I swear to god, Alistar has THE best lines in all of Dragon Age. I believe that the only conversation that comes close is when your war-hound put a dead something-or-other in Morrigan's extra underwear as a gift.

Yes you do ;x
See, the mages are sent to this tower when their magical powers are first discovered--regardless of race, gender, or social standing. They have to live in this tower for pretty much their whole lives, under constant guard of these knights called the Templars, which is a specific order of knights formed with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing mages. Also, they keep a vial of your blood on file, so if you DO manage to leave the tower without them knowing, they can easily hunt you down and kill you. In the mage origin story, something bad goes down so you get conscripted to join the Grey Wardens (A special army to fight the evil thingies in the land), and the templar head gets REALLY pissed off that you get to leave (which is awesome, because your character can totally say some really snide stuff to him as you're leaving) So yeah, they kinda frown on mages going outside without permission....or...at all for that matter XDD

TheDalishRanger [2010-01-07 04:33:24 +0000 UTC]
Awkward indeed.
If you want to get technical though, mages aren't brought in until their abilities are discovered, usually before age 10. If you're an elf mage, you're originally from Denerim's alienage. It's stated somewhere in the game, but I can't remember where. >_<

savagesparrow In reply to TheDalishRanger [2010-01-07 04:55:11 +0000 UTC]
I can't remember if they say where the human mage is from, but I'm pretty sure its left kinda ambiguous. But the main gist I got from it, especially when you're recruited into the grey wardens, is that they really, reaaaaaally don't like you going outside unsupervised. And somehow I see wandering around licking lamp posts as something that the templars would frown upon supervising XDD

Oh, I don't disagree that it's unlikely the mage Warden left the Tower due to restrictions; I meant chances were BEFORE they ever went to the Tower, they'd been outside. xD

I know, right? I wish more references were made to mages not really getting out much, so many interesting things could've been asked by romantic interests about how the mages get around doing...stuff...while the templars are watching XDD
