Description This was a bit of a fun project that came as a direct result of our somewhat depressed economy. Our division manager decided that a light-hearted competition might help take our minds off both the recent lay-offs and the rather bleak predictions for the upcoming months.
A staunch supporter of the local Boy Scouts, he was inspired to run a Pinebox Derby race (with additional prizes for design and appearance). This will be my entry.
A modified stock kit with standard wheels and axles. I designed and cut all of the aluminum and black plex parts with a 3-axis CVC router. (7"x2.5"x4"tall)

Hi i was wondering how you made this?

Hi,Anne. Thanks for your interest. Sadly, I didn't save any step-by-step photos but I can describe most of the steps. If you have any specific questions, I will try to answer them for you. Some of the steps involved designing parts (aluminum and plex parts) in AutoCad, then cutting them on a computerized router table. Others used common shop tools and plenty of elbow grease (sawing, drilling, sanding and polishing)
I'm working on a number of projects currently, so my attendance on Deviant Art is a bit sporadic. I will, however, still watch for your response and try to follow up as soon as I'm able.

Thanks! Sorry for the long delay. Yes, I got a first place in design. Sadly, her speed wasn't equal to her looks. She came in tenth in a group of about 20, but I was competing against some experienced pinewood veterans.

awesome car! I know first hand what it is like to make these things, having helped my son make a few. But ours never looked this good!

Thanks! It helps to have a $50K CNC router sitting around.LOL I have a few more additions to make (including a display base). It may not win the speed competition, But it should take points for style.

That's a really interesting design. Whether it wins the derby or not, it'll look great on your desk afterward!

If it's underweight, those circular cutouts along the sides would make perfect channels for some barstock, too.

Thanks! Yes, I have about 3 ounces of lead shot to add for maximum allowed weight, So your idea may prove worthwhile.
