Name: CalliopeNickname: "Cal"
Race: Earth Pony (Magically Miniaturized in order to fit in a flask/jar)
Gender: Mare
Age: 10 horse years
Family(?):
None known
Calliope spent her entire life tucked away inside a small, pale pink flask that was kept high on the shelves of some mysterious and enigmatic merchant. She could see very little outside the pink glass and could hear much less, kept there day after day in near silence, watching the blurry forms of things being picked up and set back on the shelf around her. She couldn't move, she was kept in trance the entire time, her hooves floating off the smooth glass- she needn't eat, nor sleep, nothing. All she could do was stare forward and try to make sense of the world she was oh so utterly distance from. She wasn't sure how or why, but she knew things. She knew a lot, she knew her name- but she didn't know why she was in that jar, or how she had come to be there.
One day her flask moved off the shelf, after ten years of the other items around her being reshuffled and replaced she was picked up and she left that mysterious merchant and his odd little shop far behind- her flask tucked safely away in the saddle-bags of somepony unexpected. It wasn't long after that, that she found the flask open for the first time and was able to step out into the world- finding the stunned and shocked face of a young golden-hued stallion staring down at her from where she had stepped out onto the surface of a table.
"I am Calliope I bid you hello, and thank you for freeing me of my flask. You are?"
It took Pastel a long time to garner a response to that, stammering his name in response and completely winded. Soon after that, that young stallion may or may not have feinted soon there after, and that was the beginning of the unlikely friendship between Calliope and one Apple Pastel.
He had a hell of a lot of questions once he came to, and she was content to answer- ever monotone and flat, her voice barely expresses anything more than neutrality. It is a rare thing indeed to garner any sort of emotion in her voice, or expression, and that is simply how she is. (She'd likely be compared to Maud Pie if ever she came across someone who had met the Pie Family Member).
With nowhere for her to go, he invited her (well, not so much invited, just went ahead and accepted the fact) to stay with him. He never asked if she wanted to stay nor ever mentioned anything about it if she would- he took her in and cared for her with little question and Calliope went along with it willingly, she has a good sense of other ponies (like a strange, sixth sense) and felt in her heart that Pastel was one of the 'good ones'. He built her a cute little room with a bed and things, using the flask she had come from as the walls and hanging it from the roof like that of a glass terrarium. She is able to get to it from a little bridge he built for he that spanned between it and one of his desks. He also went ahead and made modifications to his apartment and added stairs and walkways for her all around so she could traverse the apartment with ease, due to her small, miniature stature.
It came as quite a shock to Pastel when he woke one morning to find a very Regular Sized Calliope making him apple shaped pancakes. She had failed to mention it for a few weeks of living with him, but she could become full sized (his height, as any regular Earth Pony)- but she could only hold this size for 3 hours a day. Outside of these three hours, she remains about the size of an apple, as Pastel had grown used to.
Calliope's introduction into the world she had been shut off from went much more smoothly than should have been possible. She seemed to have extensive knowledge of pony culture, city life, various art forms, and all things in between- and integrating into Manehtatten society was almost easier for her than it was for Pastel. She quickly became acquainted with the graffiti artists and the goth society in the city, as well as the crowd that runs with the nightclubs, djs, rock bands, etc.
Calliope proved herself very influential and pushed Pastel to stand up for himself and have a bit more self-confidence- In a way, she became his Muse. She encouraged him to put his art up in galleries around the ity and helped him gain more confidence in who he is, and what he loves to do. She could see natural talent in him,and nurtured it, encouraged it- but also made him experience things new. She made him push his own boundaries and experience all new types of art and things he would never have tried had he never met her- including goth culture, nightclubs (drugs too, though only lightly), rock music, and cross-dressing. Especially cross-dressing.
In way with her lax and easy going nature, she suggested he try putting on what is considered 'traditional' mare's clothes, and makeup- and helped him to do it. Calliope holds no judgement for the things ponies like that others may find as odd, and never batted an eye at the idea that Pastel could and would dress as a mare- she simply helped him find what he likes, told him he looked beautiful- meant it- and helped him with the eyeliner and all other things he didn't know what to do with.
Calliope has shown no interest in making her own art, or singing- but she is very fond of poetry, and writes a lot of it. Pastel, the loyal friend he is, goes with her to every Poetry reading and poetry slam and cheers her on- and she is very good.
Pastel and Calliope are very close and he cares for her deeply, and though she has a knack for being neutral and monotone, he still likes having her around and has gotten to the point where he couldn't imagine life without her. Calliope is very protective of Pastel in turn, and sticks up for him wherever she needs to. (Which in the beginning, was often). Calliope is aware of how Pastel became estranged from his family, and agreed with him on his decision to leave and pursue what he wanted. She has seen him build up his own life and make his own family and friends, and thinks whole-heartedly he needs little else. He became her entire world, and she enjoys every second of being friends with him.
She once felt she should ask Pastel to reach out to his Family, and most importantly to his sister MoonApple . She nearly told him to do so, when chance had it, and Pastel came into contact with his estranged mother- to which he had no memory of whatsoever. She knew who she was when Pastel and Indigo met by chance, and knew neither of them knew who the other was. Indigo and Pastel parted ways again as barely acquaintances- but good ones.
Calliope thinks she needn't tell Pastel to reach out to his sister, nor his mother- she knows he will, and in his own time. In the meantime she'll simply watch over him, challenge him, and keep him daring to do more, more new, more exciting.
