The Whispering Death....eh. I dunno, I just don't really care for it one way or the other. The creepy eyes are pretty cool, though.

And I don't remember if this one was shown
How do you find the designs? Were they in the movie and I just missed them?

I've got the short cartoon they released called The Book of Dragons. It shows some of the dragons that were sorta in the movie, but only as drawings in the one scene where Hiccup is going through the Book of Dragons.

They have the short on Youtube if you want to check it out.

It's a silent meat grinder >:3 And if you want the Whispering Death, give one a good dental plan!

Haha, well at least it doesn't sound as horrible as a real meat grinder. Uggg!

That would be a nice thing to have if you were a dragon with more teeth than anything else, lol! XD

I'll get to that one eventually. I liked the little blue one the best!

Yeah, the little baby one. The blue colored one looked neat.

I liked the way the mother raged when she found her baby was missing, it's like

I'm intrigued as to how this one got it's name. Venting a sightless combustable gas via a 'whispering' and then igniting it all at once to blow it's prey to kingdom come?

Scatha-the-Worm In reply to RenDragonClaw [2012-09-14 05:55:19 +0000 UTC]

Nothing really that interesting. It burrows under the ground and pops up silently under prey, and most things just die because it's mouth is a meat grinder inside. So it's really just because it's a silent, fast killer.

This may just be my unhealthy lamprey fetish talking, but when did the Tremors approach to Rending Doom from Below(R) become passe'? Especially given that most of its contemporaries seem to adopt the Scaled-up Fishing Bird with Fireballs(C) technique.

That said, my headfanon up to this point involved shotgun sprays of gas pocket-propelled teeth, with the preparatory puff-up accounting for that signature noise. Having Wiki'ed this type's official bag o' tricks...yeah, color me a bit underwhelmed by the customary flame-loogie. I suppose those Dead Eyes(R) & Metal Maw(TM) alone are about as extreme as network TV lets you get bar Adult Swim(C).

That ranted, it's good to finally get a look at one of these suckers' mouths in a shut & locked position...I had the hardest time visualizing that before this was posted. Thanks for sharing those ever-sharp skills, Scatha.

Lol, I mostly meant "Not as interesting as what Ren came up with." But then, to be fair, most things aren't as cool as what Ren comes up with.

I just wonder why they're called Whispering Death if they...really don't make any noise at all. It's...I dunno, it doesn't seem to fit this guy, really. And, again, it isn't as interesting as what you just came up with.

And thank you very kindly for the comment, Geekspace! Nice ta see ya again!

Yeah, I strongly suspect RDC's some sort of nominally humanoid idea generation device from the good folks on Planet MindBlown(TM). I'm amazed his typing fingers can keep up with that premium-octane cerebellum.

Offhand, I'm starting to see your point; you'd think with things like the Scauldron scuttling around, there'd be room for a bit more projectile-attack variety. As for names, I suppose 'Tunnelchomp,' 'Fleshchurner,' etc. might fit the bill better. These critters might not be so fleshed-out as Toothless & his pals, but hopefully W.D. here doesn't just end up a one-note antagonist. Call my snagglebucktoothed self a softie for unconventional dentition.

Again, it's just great to see you're still cranking out that scaly quality. Stoked for The Hobbit, by any chance?

He does seem to have loads of it in that little head of his. I'm glad he decides to share with us good folks.

W.D. is actually fairly friendly according to the Book of Dragons (the rewritten one, not the one that just tells you to kill everything) as long as you help it brush it's teeth. I suppose a meat-grinder would get some annoying chunks caught in odd places, so I can see why a good helpful brushing would make it happy.

Oh, like you wouldn't believe. Also a little pissed off that it's now being split into three parts, and so we probably won't see Smaug until the summer. Which is how it's supposedly being doled out this time-a winter release for Part 1, a summer release for Part 2, and Part 3 the following winter. At least it isn't a whole year apart, I suppose.

Come to think of it, I figure popcorn kernels wedged in one's gumline have nuthin' on bone splinters & gristle.

Another trilogy? Srsly? Just what were they expecting to fill Parts I & II with-Shire hijinx & hitting the peace pipe with Bombadil? Then again, I'm all for more motion-capture Serkis scenery-chewing. SsssTEW-pid fat hobbits...

Scatha-the-Worm In reply to geekspace [2012-09-16 12:03:44 +0000 UTC]

From what I understand, Part 1&2 are the Hobbit itself, and Part 3 is the stuff that happens away from Bilbo and the Dwarves with Gandalf, the Necromancer and Dol Guldor.

It also seems that my earlier post was incorrect-they are split up by a year. Which is just absolutely enraging.

Necromancer? OK, that's it: time for a reread, 'cause I've clearly forgotten more than my share of pre-Rings Tolkien.

I can vaguely guess at the gravy-train angle accounting for those yawning release-date gaps, but that hardly makes this development any less aggravating. You have my sympathies.

Scatha-the-Worm In reply to geekspace [2012-09-16 13:23:56 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, sorry-I forget that not everyone knows about that. The Necromancer = Weakened Sauron. He was just known as the Necromancer because no one was sure at the time that it was him. It wasn't explained in the books themselves-this was Appendix stuff. But, still, don't let that stop you from re-reading! It's a good book for a nice read.

Money is really the only reason I can see for this, which is all fine and dandy and the fantastic work they do on these movies means they deserve it, but damnit. They could at least release the first two closer together instead of leaving a yawning, gaping chasm between the middle and the climax of the story.

Oh, right, the Appendices...dear lord, but Tolkien was a fiend for footnotes. Still seems head-deskingly obvious now that you've clarified that connection. And I'll have to get about that rereading just to have a better idea of how the hell Jackson's gonna parse a trilogy out of all that. It's not like the Rings where half the time it's a jump from one battlefield to another.

I'm wondering how that works, too. I'd hate to sit through a slog of a movie, even if it is The Hobbit. I just don't know how they stretched a 150 sum page book into three three hour movies.

I'm optimistic, though. I'm pretty sure they made it just as fun as the book (hopefully, or, you know, I may just start foaming at the mouth.)
