Here's my "Welp, not dead. "picture.

I promised myself I would finish it today if I was still here, so...here it is!

....Not really. I just felt like it, because I am excited to see the Hobbit. No, I still have not gone. Waiting for people to go with. I tried to get a little closer to Tolkien's own drawings for this one.

Very heavily based. I took a look at most dragon drawings he did, but when it came to most of it, I looked at that drawing the most.

Very nice. I'll echo DH's commentry and add that it's a fine interpretation of Smaug's original depictions. Hypergojira mentioned he wanted to do something similar.

Well I'm glad I helped push you to make this fine (should I say magnificent) Smaug. I really like the pose, proportions, the powerful jaws, the tail and the layout and detail of the wings. Very nice. My only critcism is that I thought he had no eyes at first (which was very disturbing), then realized they were glowing read. I might suggest a bit more contrast.

Anyway, I not having much luck with my Smaug. I did a couple roughs, but nothing is sticking yet. Hopefully your great calamity can inspire me. Thank you for sharing!

I'm always irritated by those eyes. I know he said that they were red in the books, but it's very hard to illustrate without them blending into the rest of his head. That's why the black is there around his eyes, but it doesn't seem to help that much. I'll get it down one of these days, though.

I missed the black, but don't sweat it - it is a great Smaug. I didn't realize they where supposed to be red, I think that is something I will omit if I do a color version of the old longwyrm.

Pretty cool! That dark, rusty red looks really good on him and I love the way you handled his tail. Definitely reminiscent of Tolkien's old drawings, but with a deadlier, more organic look. Nicely done!

The tail I was sorta waffling on. I wasn't sure if I wanted it the normal way I do Tolkien dragons, or if I wanted to try this way. Glad I did it this way, as it does look nice.
