New Scatha picture on his now silver hoard. I dislike gold and so I changed it. I also found a brush that makes a coin texture!

Steal Scatha's silver at your own risk.

Between the quirky touches on both ends (i.e. lynx-ears & triple-tail-tip), your customary style & that fine pinpoint optic glow, your namesake here oozes fell style, Scatha. That blade & horn seem a bit oversized, but perhaps they're ensorcelled for the owner's convenience-kinda like the One Ring's shrinkage to fit Isildur...

Thank you very kindly, Geekspace! Glad to see ya again, and glad ya like this new take! I just had to draw him again once I found that coin texture, and make the hoard silver. It was pretty perfect all around, haha!

The sword and horn are extra big so you can see them, actually. If I drew them to scale they wouldn't show up, lol! Besides, I dunno how big Scatha was, really-some pictures he's got a head the size of Fram, some he's only about as big as a horse. Tolkien wasn't big on giving actual sizes, lol.

Fair point regarding Tolkien's epic-myth vagueness on 'vital' stats. Reminds me of how all we have to go on for Ancalagon is (a) black, (b) winged, and (c) big enough to pancake a mountain range by dropping dead.

In rather belated other news: enjoyed Part I of Jackson's Hobbit, even if keeping Smaug that far under wraps felt a bit trollish (and not in the cave-dwelling, pony-roasting way).

I take the drawings of Tolkien into account when I do size, too. Chrysophylax Dives isn't much bigger than Farmer Giles' horse, and I felt that was big enough for a cold drake like Scatha. Ancalagon and Glaurung are the ones I consider as the "big" ones, with Smaug in the middle.

That irritated me a little, too. I suppose they want him to be mysterious so the "big reveal" is cooler, but man. I do like what we did see, though. Four legs and wings, looks fairly beefy and the color is nice. He's gonna look pretty beastly when we do see him.

Plausible size-range to me. This conversation itself's an eye-opener; I'd completely forgotten the Tolkien bestiary included dragons scaled & powered down enough to challenge-but not obliterate-single heroes. Or, say, the Shire sans convenient Human/Elven/Dwarven/Istari guests.

"Never did think I'd see one o' these wee enough for bear trappin'-YEEEOW! Me good pinky!"

"What'd I JUST TELL ya about ticklin' it??"

This is a conversation that could happen, in all honesty. Pippin would stick his hand in range of a dragons mouth and then irritate it.

Worm is a term for long, snaky dragons. It's usually spelled Wyrm, but Tolkien spelled it this way.

Haha, don't worry, it took a lot of other people a long time as well. It's not like Scatha is a big thing in Tolkien's stories, anyway-just a passing mention and a short history in the Appendixes.

Maybe he is. XD

That's mostly where I got the tail tips from, the original Smaug from the cartoon. Other than that it's all based on Tolkiens own drawings of his dragons. They were all very lizardy but had pointed ears.

Thank you kindly, Sir K! Glad ya like it!

Nice to see the worm again. Is there anything important about the sword and the horn in the treasure? I don't remember anything from the stories, but it is a pretty remote character in the mythos to begin with.
