Description This is a bit early since I haven't done studio photos of him yet, but I couldn't resist. This is "Aphelion" (named after the Tristania song), a white and silver male kirin.

Aphelion is a ooak (one of a kind) hand made unicorn or kirin sculpture. He was made entirely from scratch from polymer clay over a wire and tin foil armature. He is about 11 inches long fron front hoof to the tip of the tail, and about 8 inches from the ground to the tip of his antler.

I haven't made a lying down horse or anything in ages. It was difficult but I love sculptures in lying down poses, I would make tons if it wasn't so hard. Ah well, practise practise. I had intended to make a white furry kirin for a few months now, so it's nice to have him done.

His eyes are "rain" coloured 5mm equine pupil eyes from Dreaming Tree Studio (they are inset and made of resin). The hair is cashmere goat fur, which I had never used before. I enjoyed making the antlers especially, you will see more of them in the future!

I took this photo at my grandmother's cottage. It was cold, raining, and there were snakes everywhere. Neither me or Aphelion fell into the lake or got bitten by any snakes so I'm happy, and the photos turned out decently too.

Aphelion was created to auction on ebay. I plan on putting up the auction within the next week or so. I will update my journal with the link when it goes live. Otherwise, you can watch my facebook page, I will post the link there too! [link] The auction will start at 99 cents, so everyone can have a chance to bid. If he sells well I will try and make more for ebay in the next while.

I hope you like him!

Edit: The auction is over and he is now sold! Thanks everyone. He is now owned by ~3kidsandahorse .

these creatures must be rare to be seen if they're real. just thought i'd say something different rather then saying that it's not real. hope that's ok. (shrugs).

This is mutch like a Elkorse, it has the same tail and antler, only the head and body are a little diff.

You mean like half elk half horse? That's sort of what he is, except with scales and a long tail. And he has shorter legs more like a goat than an elk, but yeah

So beautiful! I love it!

Did you bake it?
If so, which temperature did you set? (The metal doesn't melt..?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scenceable In reply to Indian-Tribe [2011-08-08 08:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you I baked it at 275F or so which won't melt metal, it's not nearly hot enough

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indian-Tribe In reply to scenceable [2011-08-08 11:51:30 +0000 UTC]

Ok thank you!
Can the metal rust once it's baken?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scenceable In reply to Indian-Tribe [2011-08-08 22:03:25 +0000 UTC]

the metal won't rust but sometimes people use brass tubes and sometimes they can oxidize and go greenish over time. Usually since the clay is covering the metal it can't oxidize since it's not exposed to air

Question, as to sculpting and I'm using super sculpy, how do you go about in gettting rid of fingerprints??
Am I just better off wearing gloves? XD

scenceable In reply to HorsemensWhiskey [2011-07-18 19:15:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I do multiple bakes, so I make the body first and then bake it, then do the head, etc so I always have dry clay to hold on to. I use my palm to burnish the clay and make it smooth, and also sometimes I do oil on a brush to smooth it. Hope that helps!
