Description This is part 2, which includes baking, painting, and hairing.

PRESS DOWNLOAD TO GET THE FULL TUTORIAL PDF. It is fairly long.

Part 1 is here: [link]
It includes making the armature and sculpting the horse.

This tutorial has been the death of me. Putting it together was fine, took about 5 hours, but was fun.

Finding a way to change the word document into pdf, woah boy. After 2 hours of searching, downloading crap, etc, I finally got it. Then DA said the file was too big, so I had to redownload itinto 2 parts.

Dang.

Anyhow, I was asked to do this tutorial, and at first was reluctant since =Indigo-Ocean already has a really good one. However, I figured if people want to make a horse, it's good to have different techniques to look at.

I tried to focus more on sculpting facial details, and not so much on the body. I also went into baking and color painting and such, so hopefully a few people find this helpful.

Sorry I do not have this online somewhere for those that do not have pdf readers. (downloading a reader takes a few minutes, if you're really desperate)

That's amazing! Forgive me for thinking this, but I previously thought people who 'sculpted' these creatures were just taking breyer horses and adding clay on top of them. Super informative tutorial!

Ohh awesome, you should link me some of your sculptures when you're done, I'd love to see! I buy my eyes from Dreaming Tree studio, she's ~CozmicDreamer on here. She's got a website and an etsy store that both sell eyes

I'm glad you liked them. They're about 3 years old so I would take everything in them with a grain of salt, but I guess it's a good starting point

I have a question. A while back I heard some rumor about baking super sculptey in the oven. I'm a little leery about baking it but I'm not that skilled to work with the self hardening clays right now. Any suggestions? Would covering the sculpt be recommended for a case like this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scenceable In reply to DreamCrystalArt [2011-05-11 12:37:18 +0000 UTC]

What rumour was that? That you can't bake it? I have a separate oven for sculpting (it's a little convection oven I got at walmart) since my kitchen oven is really ghetto and doesn't bake evenly. For anything you paint, uneven baking isn't a big deal but for the fancy skin polymer clays for dolls and such (cernit and the like) uneven baking can ruin the finish. I have a tray thing with a big pile of polyfil (cotton stuffing, I ripped it out of a teddy bear) which I lay the sculpture on to bake. I don't cover it or anything. The stuffing prevents the metal tray from flattening or disfiguring the sculpture I would recommend for big gas ovens that you bake on lower temperatures than the clay recommends (I think super sculpey is supposed to bake at 275, I would put it at 225) and then let it bake for a longer amount of time. The clay will still cure but will be less likely to burn or heat up unevenly

Sorry for the novel, I hope that helped a bit!

You know, I was looking at convection/toaster ovens about a week ago and thought there might be a size issue with some items... completely forgot I could place items on their side for baking XD

Thank you for reminding me of that. But yeah the rumor was something along the lines that it wasn't really all that safe to use the same oven that you cook food with to bake the sculptey.. but seeing a lot of people do that well guess that is moot.. still I think I'll look into one of those smaller ovens again.

Thanks ^^

scenceable In reply to DreamCrystalArt [2011-05-12 00:11:47 +0000 UTC]

I would use a different baking tray for sculptures than for food, but other than that it's fine to use the same oven. Lying down the sculpture helps a lot with size for sure!

I see. Thanks for the advice though (needs to test the temperature for their oven) I believe it's and electric oven but it's several years old and has some baking issues already I think

Should all the acrylic be dry before applying Pearl Ex?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scenceable In reply to MalteseLizzieMcGee [2010-02-08 16:25:19 +0000 UTC]

nope, you can mix the pearl ex into it (I find it sticks better) also if the pearl ex is dry then you spray it with the matte spray it can blow some of the pearl ex off. Sometimes I get the brush a little wet and then dip it in the pearl ex as well. I use a fan brush to put the pearl ex on

hope that helped

scenceable In reply to Leedlpuff [2009-04-12 01:47:19 +0000 UTC]

I had a thin piece of gold colored wire and just strung it through the flowers or wrapped it around them tightly, its not really involved enough for me to do a tutorial, hehe

you can use a needle and thread too I guess.

scenceable In reply to Leedlpuff [2009-04-12 01:58:03 +0000 UTC]

what don't you know? just buy a bunch of small fake flowers (like from a craft store) and string a bunch together.

if you really want I can make a mini tutorial sometime.
