Description
Tis Jet in his apartment reading a nice book!Started sketching out a random figure in Paint Tool Sai of a guy lying on his stomach, but then I started adding hair and a nose and minutes later became Jet. C:
To see sketch, click here [link]
I didn't add Jet's eyes in, mostly because Jet looks a lot better when his hair completely covers them; and plus that's how I first saw him when I got into the series.
Stupid dresser.
I referenced the whole thing from this screencap I took. [link]
[EDIT] Changed the saturation of Jet's hair (it was like waaaay too orange), and plus I fixed his hips so they're not so round.

Calm Jet needs a break from fighting. C: Glad you like it!

I love everything about this: the crisp lines, the shadow on the wall, and the relaxed position that Jet is in. It's just a nice different take instead of showing 002 in the heat of all the action--good to know he takes some to relax every now and then!
I'd also have agreed on the comic book theory. I didn't read the entire manga but think if Jet grew up fending for himself in the Bronx (and based on his personality) he'd read easy-to-get adventures of superheroes and crimefighters for a quick cheap escapism--probably while hanging out at the local drugstore with his pals. But a nice hardcover book from the New York Public Library? I'd guess Jet would read "Treasure Island", "2001 Leagues Under the Sea" or an H.G. Wells novel--anything with a hero thrown into a wild swashbuckling or science fiction adventure

Why thanks so much! It's fun to draw Jet when he's just doing simple everyday things, cuz in a way you're sorta getting to know him more as a person than just a superhero.
I see you caught onto me and 's convo about Jet and comics, ne? He definitely seems like the type who would read a comic, and even more so when he was a kid, probably back waay before he was the ringleader of a gang.
I like the hardcover book idea more since it shows that he's relaxing-relaxing rather than read and get amped by superhero panels. C: You can also tell he's relaxing because I drew him without his shoes on.
He probably would go for "Treasure Island" or "2001 Leagues Under the Sea", or anything not relevant to his battle with Black Ghost since the book he has is more about "fun" monsters he can "battle". ;D

Wow I actually reeaaaally like the sketch! I dunno it's just me but I always love the sketchy look and it reminds me of those rough drafts you see in animation books.
I like the digital coloring version too but to be honest I think the sketch has a more natural mood. : D

Yeah from this point forward I am gunna do just that---submit polished pics with links to my original sketches, cuz I usually like how my sketches turn out as well as my colored pieces. ;>

To quote an another comment: "Pin-up Jet? YES PLEASE!"
It's really cute, I really like these kinds of tranquil pictures, even if I do enjoy the action, but it's nice to see that within the fandom, the characters are allowed a few moments of peace, to read a book... or pose for a Pin-up picture!
Now I can't get that idea out of my head

Well thanks so much!
And yes I agree totally. There's just so much of a character in action and not enough of them taking a break. Jet deserves a little quiet time from kicking Black Ghost's ass. ;D

I. LOVE. THIS.
That research you did, the angles, the simple layout, love it!!! in official artwork, you don't normally see eyes at that angle, so I'm cool with it too :3
I wonder what Jet is reading, it's not a comic, so it's surprising! :3

Jet reads comic books?? That's news to me! (but no seriously, does he?)
Actually to be honest I never thought of what sorta book to give him, but I never thought he'd read a comic book (unless he grew up with them in the 50's-60's, then I'd say it would be the Flash or Superman). But when I was making this I wanted to give him something with Italian text as an in-joke about his heritage and seeing if he'll understand any of it.XD
I think the genre of the material he's reading is meant to be a mystery to the viewers (since the purpose of the pic is drawing the viewer in to his swinging feet and try to guess what he's reading), but I bet it's got lots of spitfire dog-fighting action. ;D

I swear he did, but I cannot tell you where. in the manga (untranslated, not sure where) Jet wears a Superman T-shirt. in volume 3 or 4 of the english, Joe is reading a comic book! :3
hee hee, us pesky fans don't want to wonder we want answers! XD

You're doing your job by not telling me, Biscy cuz I want to stay in the suspense of the series for as long as possible.;>
Actually it's Joe who reads the comic before he G.B. and Albert go on a mission to find Prof. Dolphin (you know the one with his daughter Iruka?). It's in vol. 3 of the manga, a little after the chapter "Man and Machine".
But Jet reading a comic? Hmmm, I wonder how he'd look reading one (unless it's in the untranslated version of the series). But I do like the idea in him in a Superman shirt. *wants to see* XD
You're gonna have to take Jet's book away if you wanna find out! Of course he ain't gunna be happy about it, just look at how content he is. ;D

well... I would tell you if I remembered but.. if it works for you. XD
Yeah, I know that was Joe I own that comic!
I'm... fairly sure Jet does it at one point... actually what was it Jet was reading in volume 8/9??
XDD so true

Schreibaby-Zephyr In reply to inertbiscuit [2011-08-12 09:47:02 +0000 UTC]
I bet it will be neat to see what happens in the untranslated versions (though I know not one word of Japanese) of the series. Good Ol' Ishinomori was willing to keep us going for this long before his untimely passing and leaving the series totally open-ended like that...
Heeheeheeee, same here! I actually like reading the hard copies better cuz they're something nice I can relax to. In a way, that's probably why I drew Jet relaxing on his bed like that.
Oh don't worry, I believe you when you say Jet is reading a comic, either it escaped my notice or I didn't get the 9th volume yet. XD But I will see it eventually.

Jet with his hair covering his eyes certainly does suit him. Not just that when I can't be bothered doing his eyes I just cover them. Yes I am lazy sometimes XD. Even without his eyes visible though you can still express a lot with him. It's the same with Joe's eyes. I find those two points are the most expressive parts of the characters. Iconic you could say.
Have I ever told you how much I love your soft vibrant colouring. *sparkly eyes* It's just so recognizable. I can understand why you had trouble with the dresser. Getting the angle for the perspective to match with the rest of the image, mainly a figure can be difficult. Especially when you haven't used parallel guide lines for both dresser and figure. Anyway the perspective is looking great and the shaded texture you have used for the walls is effective.
Jet pinup? YES PLEASE! And on the other side of my room I would have a Joe pinup. The worlds two best looking guys 8D... I really need to find another hobby XD
Btw how are you going with the Random C009 meme? Just curious that's all ^^.

Schreibaby-Zephyr In reply to Sky-Ghost [2011-08-08 11:21:24 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Jet is most certainly expressive even with his eyes covered, and you know, that's JUST how I like it. ;>
Awwwwwww, you're the sweetest Terri! Yeah, I love doing sloooow pretty soft painterly type art. It's just so therapeutic and relaxing. Most people like to be all "I want to do this quick and make it pretty". Not me though, I take it slow and steady and make sure it has lots of soul into it. C:
The dresser was a bitch to do; and whoever did Jet's dresser in the anime must've done a mighty awesome job. I envy him/her for doing so. ;V
Oh the meme? I'm about 3/4 finished with it! I should have it up in a few days or a week. Don't worry, it may be a slow process, but I've definitely worked on it alot.

I like to take as much time as I can too. I'd rather do one good job that a half effort one. Well that is till I get bored with it. Hence why I leave a lot of my stuff as sketches .
Yeah I'm full of sweet sugary goodness XD. Can't wait. I love to see the responses. They make me laugh.

It's always alright to have stuff as sketches, that is if you look back onto it and think "this is too awesome, I think I might color it in and see how it looks" feeling.
Btw how are you handling CS5?

I suppose so ^^
Still learning what all the tools do. It's great with all the variety of options but much more confusing to use compared to Gimp. I still use Gimp for certain things such a scaling, cropping, tranparency and that. I found out a few days ago that Gimp can actually save images in the photoshop format. It certainly makes it easier to transfer between the two. Also found a heap of brushes for CS5 and are looking great, haven't used them yet but hope to soon.
