I've wanted to design a starbase like this for a long time...and now I have
"Located on the fringe of federation space bordering the still largely unexplored Beta quadrant, Yorktown Station was one of Starfleets largest and most sophisticated outpost of its time, second only to Earth Spacedock. Providing vessels with crew rotations, fuel, supplies and repairs as well as functioning as a key trading post for other species in the region, Yorktown became nexus for all the nearby worlds that have been inducted into the Federation. Given itβs proximity to unexplored territory, Yorktown Station also boasted an impressive armament of 26 Phaser turrets and 12 Photon torpedo launchers, making it also one of the most well defended stations outside of the Sol System." - Starfleet DatabaseΒ

That is the beauty of headcanons, they can be as simple or as complex as you want to make them
In my case, the Constitution class ship is inspired by Gabe Koerner's design, but with my own twists and there will be Axanar-era ships flying around as support fleets

Exactly, they share a lot but they all keep their own military. there are exchange programs though that lasts as max when an officer becomes a captain; like one of my main ship's first officer is an Andorian and she gets promoted to captain at some point but, they were able to give her a human ship as command because of plot shenanigans

Interesting. I have a simiar idea in my headcanon. In short, all the major races in the alpha and beta quadrents end up in another galaxy after the borg invade. They band togeher, along wih races from the new galaxy and form the Galactic Federation. Each race retaines their own milatery and region of space, but it all adds up the the whole of the new federation. Or sonething like that

Well, it is a federation afterall, so each faction can rule itself but they band together when they have to take decisions that affects them all 
In my story, the galaxy feels as insanely big as it should, so without the "alien of the week" there are more stories about the exploration. Also I changed the scale of power a bit: Humans, Andorians and Tellarites are similar in power, but the Vulcans are more like the Mimbari, they are a much older race so the other races cannot hope to beat one of their ships! So Vulcans act as a mentor race and they help sending ambassadors and advisors. The Klingons are from a previous "batch" of races than Humans or Andorians or Tellarites, but not as old as the Vulcans. they are out there, in an empire deep withing the galaxy.

Thanks! I'd like to think that the Federation won the 4-years war agains the Klingon Empire only because they fought a small portion of the empire, they were not fully commited to that conflict, with that I want to give the Klingon Empire some mystery around them.

That is true! and it works well even if that part of my headcanon is more closely inspired by the fan-film "Prelude to Axanar". But I do plan to make my own version of the Crossfield class in the Axanar style, just as a sort of peace-offering from me to all Trek fans
