"Located on the fringe of federation space bordering the still largely unexplored Beta quadrant, Yorktown Station was one of Starfleets largest and most sophisticated outpost of its time, second only to Earth Spacedock. Providing vessels with crew rotations, fuel, supplies and repairs as well as functioning as a key trading post for other species in the region, Yorktown became nexus for all the nearby worlds that have been inducted into the Federation. Given it’s proximity to unexplored territory, Yorktown Station also boasted an impressive armament of 26 Phaser turrets and 12 Photon torpedo launchers, making it also one of the most well defended stations outside of the Sol System." - Starfleet Database
