Description Finally Thomas is 100% done!!! I might just add some details in the cab and have a look for face that fits. Aside from that this is the final result, and I'm quite happy with how he turned out
Comments and criticism welcome (aside from that he is too long - no, I based him off the real engine rather than his unrealistic TV-series model)

Oh wow, this is very good. I hate to say it but I find it better than those sets that have most of the parts pre-made to look like Thomas's key attributes. If I were 4 years old, I would have loved to have this as a toy.

Thank you! I do know what you mean, making all the decals/liver just with bricks wasn't the easy way to go, but it definitely was fun! Thanks again!

What a fantastic build!

In-fact I've just built a RWS Thomas model, however it is nowhere near as complex as this, No striping or details. One key difference in mine is the flat-running board to refer to the 'Latest' RWS Model, however this model is by far absolutely stunning! There is some great detail in this I could never hope to achieve with actual LEGO parts!

I cannot wait to see this Thomas in a Railway Environment!

Thanks for your kind comment!
But don't bash your own models, they are really nice as well! Your Thomas is even some steps ahead - he has Annie and Clarabel and a face! (I need to build them too some time )
One thing is that your models seem to be a little bit too short. You really need to get some Big Ben Bricks wheels - they just look so much better than the wheels Lego offers (except for the Emerald Night wheels).Β
And I have to tell you something: if I can build these stripes and detail you can do it too! Just let me know if you need help, I'll be there for you.

I actually have some freight cars, I'll upload a pic with Thomas and those!

Oh wait, I just saw you youtube channel (and the new one) and saw that you already have those BBB wheels. I also saw the siderods, now I really envy those! I have to order them sometime as well! I'm eager to see what you have in store

They work a charm! Glad you have seen it, I might post some more pictures soon, but Yes I'm starting to step away from my small-scale, TVS locomotives, and more towards RWS better scale ones. I'd really appreciate your help in future actually as I'd really like to do something with these models, and it would be amazing to work with other LEGO modellers who share enthusiasm, earlier today I made some accessories such as buffers and signals based on some of your designs. You've been a great source of inspiration so working with you in future would be great!

The side-rods certainly do go well with the BBB wheels, They're a bit scratchy, but certainly worth-it!

Hope to speak again soon, and cannot wait for Thomas and his Rolling stock, Also my Thomas is currently quite lonely and has nothing else his scale to work with, so I guess we're in the same boat

Oh, sounds promising!Β
I'm also currently trying to make a working signal, but it sounds easier than it really is
I'm glad to know that my models inspire other people, so I'm even more excited to see some stuff from you.

Also I just uploaded the pic with rolling stock. Not the best quality pic but you see more than now

Brilliant! Bunker and cab are best part.

Can't help but think the wheels are too small. But then you would lose the runningboard to keep total height down.

ScotNick In reply to BaronVonIron [2016-07-10 09:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
Yes the wheels are a little bit small, but the next size would've been too big. Much too big compared to other engines. And the wheels would probably look unproportional to the rest of the model, but yes, I had concerns about the wheels as well

Do you ever make a list of the pieces you use to make these?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to TheLaughingGiant [2016-07-10 10:02:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I don't know, sometimes I used what I had rather than with plan. Then I see which pieces I have to order and then I build itΒ

I really like the black on it too. Looks more realistic, because white running boards would be pretty filthy after being walked on by railwaymen who run coal-fired steam locomotives.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to Rockyrailroad578 [2016-07-10 10:05:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, I originally wanted to make it light gray. But all the real engines had it black so I decided to make it black here as well

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rockyrailroad578 In reply to ScotNick [2016-07-10 16:44:13 +0000 UTC]

I think either looks good, but black is more realistic. It also corresponds to the RWS illustrations.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to Rockyrailroad578 [2016-07-10 17:51:41 +0000 UTC]

I prefer the black version

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rockyrailroad578 In reply to ScotNick [2016-07-10 21:07:26 +0000 UTC]

Much less toylike in that sense.

I also never got why Thomas and the others didn't get even a light bit of weathering. It did help them stand out from the background, but a little bit of grey wouldn't hurt.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to Rockyrailroad578 [2016-07-17 10:22:44 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, probably market reasons - weathered engines probably sell worse and cost more in production

I want it. How much?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to DanteZX [2016-07-09 22:15:10 +0000 UTC]

Haha, sadly it's not for sale
It took me so long to get all the parts, the designing itself took many designs and revisions

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DanteZX In reply to ScotNick [2016-07-10 04:52:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I figured I'd take a shot at asking. Do you happen to take commissions or draw up the designs on Lego digital designer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to DanteZX [2016-07-10 10:04:12 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yes asking can't be wrong
Yes I'd take commissions, depends on the theme as I'm not very talented with futuristic stuff or robots.
But yes I do, just let me know what you'd like to see. Right now I don't have much time but that will change with September

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DanteZX In reply to ScotNick [2016-07-10 18:46:26 +0000 UTC]

I'll keep that in mind come September

ScotNick In reply to DanteZX [2016-07-17 10:23:26 +0000 UTC]

You can also write me now, I'll see what I can do
Just don't expect anything before September

im very happy to see this again ^^
does it move properly around the track sections?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to mitchika2 [2016-07-09 21:18:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like it
Yes, it navigates trough curves and switches easily (although this is probably the furthest the wheels can be apart).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mitchika2 In reply to ScotNick [2016-07-09 21:43:12 +0000 UTC]

maybe you could construct Annie and Clarabel next ~
it must be nice having such a great model you built yourself.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to mitchika2 [2016-07-09 22:13:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh, believe it or not, I really thought about that. But then I'd have to power one of them to make the whole train go around.
And yes, it's great! It took about 1 1/2 years to get all the parts together so I'm quite happy to have it finally done. I might just try to find a face that fits and add some cab detail.

That's so awesome!!! Did you use Lego designer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScotNick In reply to nickadventurepics [2016-07-09 21:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
And yes, I used Lego digital designer. However it took me quite some time to design this one - I redesigned it so often. The first model is about 3 years old
