An early concept studied under NASA contract for a manned Mars lander. The slim "parachute" was a rigid metal structure meant to slow and stabilize the descent... but this was designed prior to Mariner Mars '64, when the assumption was that Mar's atmosphere was thought to be more than ten times thicker than it actually is.
