Description
The FN Fusil Automatique Spécial emerged in the midst of the Cold War as a lightweight suppressed carbine, optimized for troops deployed in or beyond enemy lines. Initially intending to be marketed towards Western militaries as the ideal firearm for recce teams, FOOs, and other specialized units, the FN FAS failed to pass preliminary internal trials. Despite a generous upper ventilation cutout and the addition of a heavy profile cold-hammer forged barrel, the FAS suffered from overheating leading to accuracy loss during duration shooting. While considered a developmental failure, elements of it's layout would go on to influence the design of the FN FNC in 1979.
