Description Photographer: me

Model: Neebow

I am specifically looking for feedback regarding the tones. With this series of photos, I have generally leaned toward sepia tone. However, in this case, I liked the redish tone. The model, on the other hand, prefers the sepia. Which do you prefer? Why? Does one tone or the other elicit a different mood or feeling for you? Does one or the other seem more appropriate in the context of other elements of the image? Please share.

This photo is done using a technique called "painting with light". This is not a digital manipulation, but was done in camera, pretty much exactly as you see it, other than minor adjustments, cleanup, and toning. A full explanation of the technique can be found on my website FAQ .

This was photographed with a Canon EOS 20D and 28-70mm f2.8 L lens. 30 second exposure. Hand held light. This print is available for purchase on my website .

I really enjoy the red. Sepia has been done a million times over, it's calming and classic but i feel it does nothing for this photo. The red catches my eye and lures me to the details of the model's pose, expression, etc. and the presence of the umberella. Also, I think the added foreground of the sepia version, which is not necessarily better or worse, completely changes the photo. It seems like such a small change, but i'm beginning to wonder if the red photo catches my eye merely because of the color or because of the proximity between my eyes and the model. I'm still sticking with the red tone, but it would be interesting to see if it makes a difference when the photos are truely the same. Btw, I love this painting with light concept.

Though both pix are excellent - i prefer the red tone. I think it definitely adds a different mood to the photo - Something of a mix up of devilishness, seductiveness and magic. Great job with both - i love all your 'painting with light' stuff and i'm definitly going to give it try

I think the red adds more emotion to the picture. As it is said before, sepcia creates a more classic mood. The pose and the expression don't "fit" classic, it looks more...er... erotic type of shot, which I think the red fits more. That is my humble opinion

well...it depends on what kind of feel you want to the picture to have. sepia is classic...so generally people will choose sepia as its easier and familiar on the eyes. the red tone gives it an interesting twice. it makes her look...urm...more tempting to touch....er...know what i mean? because i think the red tone compliments the expression and mood in this picture.

i have no preference...sorry, because i think both are alright, it all depends on what you would like the audience to feel.

i prefer the sepia both for the tone and the composition. the included foregroud adds.
lovely with that umbrella hanging.

The different crop was accidental, but I have now had several people mention that the added foreground of the sepia version is a better composition, and I agree. It's hard to explain why I thought the redish toning was good idea. I tend to favor sepia most of the time. And from the feedback I've been getting, most others seem to prefer the sepia as well. I was sort of thinking that the redish tone would give it a saucier feel, which I thought would compliment the model's saucy pose and expression in this particular photo. Alas, it appears I'm the only one making this connection. Gotta stop doing those drugs.

I prefer sepia too. It seems to keep the highlights crisper.

i'm leaning more towards the sepia as well.. but the thing with the pictures is that i do prefer the composition on the right as well.. the distance and spaces seem to work better...

Thanks. Oddly, the slightly different crop was completely accidental (the original is uncropped, and I had cropped the red version to mimic the perspective of an 8x10 print, and just forgot to do that when I added the sepia version). Now that I've shown it around to a few people, several others have mentioned that they prefer the composition of the right side better too. Good catch.

This, i'm afraid, is quite unremarkable. Not very good at all
