This one was a difficult assignment, lol, hopefully I pulled off enough that the Lovecraft readers would be able to tell this is from the book without the title of the image being present.

This is awesome. Though, I always imagined the color as a sort of purple or yellow. But seriously. This is one of my favorite Lovecraft monsters. I'm glad to finally see someone try to draw it. Nice work.

I think the description I was given was to make it green but I'm glad you appreciate the effort anyway, many thanks!

Yeah. I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft's work, and The Colour Out Of Space is one of my favorites. However, the Colour itself is one of those monsters that's not easy to portray effectively in art, owing to the fact that it's defining feature is being a literal colour, one unlike any other colour on our planet. I said that I imagined it as being purple or yellow, but what I really meant was both at the same time. Besides that, it doesn't seem like a monster that would be easily depicted as scary on it's own. However, even if I had no previous knowledge of this creature, I would be able to recognize it as a creature to be feared. You've definitely been successful at depicting the unnatural horror of it.

Yeah it's definitely not the easiest 'monster' to paint. I'm just glad the client was happy with it, what with it being really ambiguous.
I'm super glad that I had a Lovecraft fan who likes it, many thanks!

If you ever do this again, I suggest one of the weirder colors. Like dark yellow-green, maybe.

I definitely knew it was the Color but I would also say that, as awesome as the art is, the green is a slight bit predictable. Most art that I have seen (that is of the higher quality like your own piece) uses the greenish tints. In fact, it's used in the movie version as well as a glowing and ambient greenish color. It's all well and good but I would imagine that use of a different color might actually make it stand out more on its own, especially if it's a color not usually associated as 'glowing'.

Fair enough, although I was commissioned to make it green so there wasn't much I could do about that

Also fair enough, lol! I know it's green in Arkham Horror (which means it's green in ALL of Fantasy Flights iterations of it), but hey, I suppose green is very much associated with aliens and the Mythos in general, aye?

I reckon so, and you know, glowy green is very 50's spacey horror/alien fear.. so I guess it's sticking around for a few more years yet
Also, this piece is for Paizo... if I remember correctly

Eric Lofgren recommended a great podcast I've been plowing through lately - HPPodcraft. They are going through the entire Lovecraft bibliography and spend one or more episodes on each story, discussing the history, literary styles and merit, and just random thoughts on each. I've really been enjoying it, and you might too! Go to HPPodcraft.com, or find it on iTunes.
