Chapter 1
Lies

"Is it dead?"

Miki flinched as the sound of those words broke the silence that had enveloped her completely. She had been lost in her own grief, standing at the edge of the huge crater left in the wake of Godzilla's fiery meltdown. There was nothing left in the over thirty mile crater that was once Haneda Airport except blackened rock. So much death and destruction, mankind's legacy.

"I apologize to have startled you Ms. Saegusa, but I need to know if its dead," the young man in military fatigues said behind Miki.

"You were there Sho, Godzilla melted down, he's gone," Miki said, not turning away from the sight before her. "You were piloting the Super X III, you and the rest of the J.S.D.F. were able to contain his meltdown. Congratulations."

The young lieutenant walked up to her, standing beside her. He was tired, exhausted, one could tell just by looking at his face. He looked out at the same devastating sight as Miki, Godzilla's final resting place. "Not Godzilla, the little one....Junior."

Miki closed her eyes, memories of the adolescent saurian creature he had known since it hatched flowing through her mind, memories now tainted by visions of the demonic monster known as Destroyah completely overwhelming the smaller creature literally killing the young monster with whom Miki shared a psychic link with since before it had hatched. Tainted by the feelings of guilt she felt of her betrayal, luring the Little One to certain death. A tear rolled down her face, but she did not face Sho, wiping it away, smearing the soot on her face.

"When Godzilla melted down, everything died."

Sho turned to the darkened silhouette of Tokyo. What she said was true. Tokyo was now a ghost town. Still, Sho did not relent.

"I understand your relationship with the Little One, Miki," Sho began, turning to the young psychic. "I also understand that Tokyo was flooded with radiation, enough that we shouldn't even be able to go within twenty miles of the city without suffering radiation poisoning. Standing here at ground zero, we should be dead. But we're not. Something absorbed the radiation, Miki....

"You heard Dr. Ijun. Commander Aso and the Prime Minister both agree with him," Miki said, fighting tears. "Errant Godzilla cells in the atmosphere after Godzilla's meltdown absorbed the radiation in an attempt to reform it's body. However, so much damange had occured, the cells died."

"I don't believe Dr. Ijuin, and the Prime Minister and Commander Aso are playing politics. I trust you Miki. Please tell me," Sho explained.

"Why?" Miki said, finally turning to Sho. "So you can continue the hunt? So we can use him to continue to fight our sins?"

Sho sighed. "No Miki. Junior showed the exact same traits as Godzilla. Which means if it is still alive, still out there, then the world may have to relive this night. However, we might not be there in time. Right now, tens of thousands of people in Tokyo are dead from the radiation released after Godzilla's meltdown. Next time, it could be in the billions. This isn't about revenge, or hunting it down, or denying our sins, this is about protecting Japan, and the world." Sho stepped up close to Miki, reaching out to her, staring into her face. "So please, tell me, look me in the eye and tell me Junior is dead."

Miki was startled by Shoe's closeness. An overwhelming feeling of falling into the man's arms gripped her, but she stood her own, looking up at the commander of the J.S.D.F. She didn't answer at first, the quiet seemingly lasting hours though it was less then a minute pause.

"Yes, Lt. Kuroki," Miki said, roboticly. "Junior is dead. It's just like Commander Aso proclaimed, the era of the kauji is over."

Sho looked deep into Miki's eyes. He betrayed no emotion, displayed no reaction. He simply dropped his arms and turned from her, and began walking away.

After a few feet, Sho stopped. "I hope they're right, Miki, I really do. I hope you're telling me the truth. Billions of lives could depend on it. I would hate to be wrong, to have that blood on my hands." Sho looked over his shoulder at Miki. "You're tired, you need medical attention. I suggest you go, have the doctors look at those wounds and get decontaminated, Ms. Saegusa, we'll talk more later."

With that Miki was left alone again, staring at the darkened city. She turned, tears flowing freely. She couldn't betray him, not again. She felt him once, after Godzilla's melt down. Her psychic powers had been fading rapidly, but this was oddly strong, powerful, a powerful wave of psychic energy. She hadn't truly lied. The creature that was once Junior, a gentle creature, young and innocent, good and protective, was gone. In his stead was something vastly different, something that had inherited the anger and hate of the creature it considered its father. But there was a tainting to this hate. Where Godzilla's hate was pure and simply, without reason, this new creature's rage grew from betrayal, from the realization of man's cruelty. It hated mankind, not for some basic instinct, but from experiences of humankind's own evil. Miki felt, that nearly sent her mind reeling and broke her heart.

Falling to her knees, Miki knew Godzilla would rise once more. There was only one question in her mind. Would this new Godzilla rise as mankind's savior, or it's destroyer?
